MSU Students and Young Adults! Please join us tomorrow night at 7pm for a discussion of "The Afterlife: What Happens After We Die?" Sunday 7pm at St. Paul's Lutheran Church downtown (the church with the anchor).

Also note that we will be migrating back to the Jones Room at MSU, starting Sunday, September 13th. So we will only have a few more weeks at St. Paul's.

Last night Table Talk discussed an important topic with a lot of facets to it: Capitalism!

We are ramping up for the fall semester, with the SOLA Theology and Bible Study set to resume in early September at Minot St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and other events coming soon.

SOLA (Students of Lutheran Apologetics) is an official student club at Minot State University, open to any duly enrolled MSU student (full-time or part-time, and not just Lutherans). If you know any incoming freshmen who are coming to MSU in a few weeks, please tell them to keep an eye out for us at the MSU Student Club Fair on the first Wednesday of classes, Wednesday August 26th.

Next week Table Talk will discuss the topic of Vaccines, this Sunday at 7pm in the MSU Jones Room, Third Floor of the Administration Building. Young adults: come and join!

Introducing SOLA, a new Lutheran Apologetics Ministry

Last week, the LCMS Synodical Convention passed a number of resolutions highlighting a pressing need for Lutheran apologetics, campus ministry, and ministry to young adults.

The following resolutions passed convention overwhelmingly or unanimously:

Res. 1-09A: "To Promote Ministry Among Youth and Young Adults"

Res. 1-10: "To Confront Increased Idolatry of Our Culture with Clear Confession of Love of Christ and Lutheran Resources in Christian Apologetics."

Res. 1-12: "To Support Campus Ministry."

The passing of these resolutions expresses a burning and widespread desire within the Lutheran church for a concerted effort toward Lutheran apologetics. The Synod's decisions confirm what is already evident on social media and through conversations with Lutherans of every demographic:

We need to connect young adults with each other and with Word and Sacrament ministry.

We need to support our college students as they go through those crucial transitions in their life.

And importantly, we need a clear confession of the faith to individuals inside and outside the Lutheran church, one that proclaims the Gospel (evangelism) and also gives a winsome defense for what we believe (apologetics).

SOLA (Students of Lutheran Apologetics), formed in January of this year, strives to be one example of this kind of ministry starting in the LCMS.

An LCMS U chapter and an official student club at Minot State University, SOLA is a Confessional Lutheran apologetics ministry to high schoolers and young adults. It has been engaging in weekly events on MSU’s campus and holds a weekly Theology and Bible class during the academic year, specifically Confessional and focused on apologetics, theology, and cultural and practical issues pertaining to the faith.

Young adults from various church backgrounds come to the weekly Table Talks at MSU. They bring thoughtful, rigorous, and respectful dialogue (even debate) to the table on a variety of hot-button topics, from Just War Theory and responding to the LGBT movement, to infant baptism and Christian dating. How many other places can young adults come together to discuss these crucial but often controversial issues, with a listening ear and a logical mind? SOLA is stepping into that arena to fill the need.

At SOLA, we seek to “Defend the Faith and Equip the Faithful.” It is our hope that this ministry can provide a viable model and, perhaps someday, apologetic resources, to other LCMS individuals and congregations, so that they can be equipped to explain why they believe what they believe to others in their lives.

SOLA is a ministry of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Minot, ND, with the help of congregations throughout the NW circuit of North Dakota. SOLA also intends to become an RSO of the LCMS.

Mr. Caleb Hoverson serves as the Director of SOLA. He is currently finalizing his Master of Arts from Concordia Theological Seminary—Fort Wayne (CTSFW).

For more information about this ministry, you may follow us on our page or email the Director for specific questions at [email protected].

The young adults at Table Talk continue to contribute robust and respectful thoughts and engaging discussion to the atmosphere of SOLA’s events. Table Talk’s continue through the summer, in the Jones Room at Minot State University, from 7 to 8:30pm on Sundays. Recent topics have included that of religious trauma and the church, birth rates in the U.S. and the world, and the ecumenical movement.

A typical Sunday evening Table Talk begins with casual conversation and fellowship. Then the discussion for the night officially starts. The topic prompt for the week, written and voted on by the young adults from the previous Sunday, is read. A crucial step in any discussion or debate is defining one’s terms, so that all sides are in agreement as to what is even being discussed. Because of this, the discussion leader (SOLA Director Caleb Hoverson) often sparks the conversation by asking for those definitions. “What is regeneration?” “What is baptism?” “What do we mean when we speak of ‘Just War Theory’?”

After a sufficient discussion about those definitions, the conversation then turns to the subject at hand. Having defined our terms, we probe the questions: “So when IS a war to be considered just?” “How SHOULD Christians discern the media or shows they consume?” “IS ‘Once saved always saved’ a biblical teaching?”

There is a great variety in the kinds of students who attend Table Talk, and all are welcome and deeply appreciated. Some participate frequently and vocally. Others prefer to come and listen. Some come very convinced of what they believe on the topic, while others are still making up their minds. Table Talk has drawn Lutherans, Baptists, Pentecostals, Roman Catholics, and others to attend and participate, with hopes that many others will come and check out what these events are like.

If you know of any young adults in Minot between age 16 and 25 who might be interested in something like this, put them in touch with Caleb Hoverson at (701) 340-6667. It is always a great time of good discussion, on topics that are highly important but often rarely discussed.

The topic this Sunday is on the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. "What kinds of government activities constitute unlawful search and seizure and violate the 4th Amendment (e.g. traffic light cameras, etc.)?"

Table Talk last night was on baptismal regeneration: does baptism save?

Next week, for whoever can come, be prepared to discuss ecumenicism: how should different denominations relate to each other? What does Christian unity look like? What about joint prayer or worship services across denominations?

Table Talk meets every Sunday night from 7-8:30pm at MSU, in the Jones Room, third floor of the administration building.

It was an honor for SOLA to be invited to present at the 2026 ND Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) Convention this weekend. SOLA Director Caleb Hoverson spoke yesterday about the mission of SOLA, why it exists, and how others can join the mission.

There are three primary ways you can support the work of SOLA.

First, please pray for us, that God would use this ministry to bless young adults, proclaim Christ crucified, and equip Lutherans to articulate the reasons for their faith.

Second, you can partner with SOLA financially. For more information on donating, as a congregation or individual, please contact Caleb Hoverson at [email protected], or his cell (701) 340-6667. Your partnership is greatly valued in this time of SOLA's infancy and early growth, and every gift, large or small, makes a difference for our work.

Third, if you know of young adults (not just college students) who are moving to Minot, please connect them with us via the same email or cell number listed above. We are eager to find new students and young adults and assist them spiritually in their transition to a new community!

Thank you to the ladies of ND LWML for their invitation! It was a joy to attend.

Young adults: join us this Sunday night for a Table Talk discussion of infant baptism. All denominations and perspectives are welcome to attend! 7pm in the Jones Room, third floor of the MSU Administration Building.

Young Adult Table is a discussion group for high school and college-age young adults, where we discuss relevant topics of the students' own choosing, from theology and politics to philosophy, culture, and practical life matters -- all in a thoughtful, rigorous, and respectful manner. Table Talk takes place year-round, including through the summer months.

Contact SOLA Director Caleb Hoverson at (701) 340-6667 with any questions, or to get directions to the Jones Room.

MSU is getting ready to clean the carpet in the Jones Room, so we improvised and used a table in the corner of the 3rd floor. Bigger windows anyway!

And another great discussion with the young adults, this time on Christ's descent into hell. We looked at its place in the Creeds and the Scriptures, covered the various denominational views on this event, and explored where the descent into hell fits within Christ's states of humiliation and exaltation.

Young adults: join us next week (hopefully in the Jones Room again) for a conversation about vaccines, science, and sources of authority. 7pm this Sunday, Third Floor of the Admin Building at MSU.
