Why Love?
Children are naturally curious, and around age three they begin to ask why questions. Why do we brush our teeth? Why does grass grow? Adults can be curious too- about specific interests and experiences, and about big-picture natters such as, How can people see the world so differently?
The First Letter to the Corinthians addresses a particularly diverse community composed of converted pagans and Jews, rich and poor, single and married- struggling with differences. One scholar counts fifteen issues, ranging from sexual behavior and food to worship and the resurrection
Paul methodically works through these difficulties, reaching the pinnacle of his argument in chapters 12 and 13. The key, he tells the Corinthians, is love, the greatest gift (13:13). And the reason we love one another-the why- is that in Spirit, we are all members of one body, the body of Christ. All parts are linked, and every part is important- to love and be loved.

Prayer: Lord God, instill in me the desire to love others as you have loved me. Amen

WND Synod Assembly met this weekend in Watford City. Our delegates; Dick Butts, Joe Stenvold and Pastor Elaine participated in workshops on Immigration experiences at our southern border, stewardship, service of neighbor, and public witness in an age of partisanship. They voted on resolutions, shared in beautiful worship, Bible study and elected the next Bishop. We’re grateful for their time and attention to the work we share with the wider church. There is much to be excited about in the future of our shared ELCA Lutheran ministry here in western ND!

Caring with Humility

I wonder if God ever regrets giving humans dominion "over every living thing that moves upon the earth" (1:28). We have certainly made a mess of things, haven't we?

In his lectures on Genesis, Martin Luther offers an explanation for our situation. He teaches that because of sin, we can no longer be confident of fulfilling God's purpose for creation. We now live under what he calls a "marred blessing". We are still blessed by God and entrusted with dominion over creation, but we should not think that we always know what's best for it. Our dominion must now coexist with a deep humility, a sense that we have much to learn as we care for creation.

How can we learn to better care for creation? One way is simply to pay attention to it. Creation has so much to teach us. So let's learn together how to bring healing to God's beautiful world. With humility, curiosity, and wonder, we can learn to bless every living thing God has entrusted to us.

Prayer: "Creator God, help me balance my care for your world with the humility to learn from it. Amen."
