Many people are exhausted because they are trying to be the sun for everyone: their family, workplace, church, community, and friends. But John the Baptist’s greatness begins with knowing what he is not.
The gospel according to light is not, “Shine harder.” It is, “Stay close to the true Light, and let your life become visible mercy.”

We often assume God’s direction will feel strategic, productive, and obviously meaningful. But in Acts 8, God sends Philip to an out-of-the-way place for one person.
Some roads look empty until God reveals who else is traveling them. The Spirit still does some of his best work off the main road.

Jonah loves the shade more easily than he loves people. That is painfully human. We often become passionate about our own discomfort while remaining strangely calm about the suffering of others.
Shade is a gift. But if we only want shade for ourselves, we may miss the heart of God. The gospel according to shade is that God cares for our weariness, but God also stretches our compassion.
