As we continue to study God’s attributes this Sunday, please take some time and listen to the song “Here is Love Vast as the Ocean (Everlasting Praise).” We’ll be focusing on the attribute of God’s justice, which demands retribution. God reacts to human conduct, both good and evil, with absolute appropriateness. Since dishonoring our holy God by sinning against Him is worse than destroying countless worlds, even the smallest sin must be punished.

However, God has made an eternal covenant with His people, both Jews and Gentiles, through Jesus Christ. By Christ’s righteous life and substitutionary death, God can forgive sin! The cross demonstrates God’s retributive justice. He distributes (imputes) Christ’s active righteousness to repentant sinners! They are justified freely by His grace only through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Thus, every believer who has repented of their sin and believed on Jesus for salvation can say with Charles Spurgeon, “I am a debtor to God’s grace and forgiving mercy; but I am no debtor to His justice, for He will never accuse me of a debt already paid!”

As the hymn says, “Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving kindness as the flood: when the Prince of Life, our Ransom, shed for us His precious blood.”
