http://loti.org/donate-now/ Welcome to Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church!

“No matter who you are or where you come from, you are welcome here.” In the 1930’s, in the midst of the Great Depression, Dr. William Passavant Christy, a pastor in a Lutheran congregation in North Minneapolis, came to the vacated and boarded up church at Lake of the Isles searching for an organ. The depression had been h

ard on the former congregation and they were forced to close their doors. There was no longer an organ in the church, but Christy was surprised to discover a beautiful sanctuary with no worshipping congregation. He likened the church to the story of Christ’s first miracle at the wedding in Cana. The church was as empty as the stone jars standing in corner, but Christ knew a miracle could happen if the jars could be filled with water. And when they were, the jars became the bearers of the finest wine. Christy often attributed the new life of the congregation to the grace of God and the hard working men and women who filled the empty shell of a church with a Christ-like spirit and energy. Nearly 80 years later, that story of Dr. William Passavant Christy continues to inspire our congregation. We believe that by God’s grace, miracles happen every day that change people lives. And we also believe that it takes hard work and energy to keep the church’s life vibrant and forward moving.

In honor of our nation’s 250th anniversary, we continue our summer sermon series, E pluribus Unum, Out of Many, One. The Latin phrase was suggested as a motto on July 4, 1776. The motto was important to the colonists who rebelled against the rule of Great Britain. When fighting for freedom, they decided that they would be more powerful if all fought together. Out of 13 colonies came one nation. This was also true of religion in America. Out of 13 different religious traditions came one belief in the separation of faith and power commonly referred to as the separation of church and state. This morning we continue with the tradition of New Hampshire.

Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

Pentecost derives its name from the Jewish festival celebrating the harvest and the giving of the law on Mount Sinai fifty days after Passover. Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the Holy Spirit as God’s presence within and among us. In Acts the Spirit arrives in rushing wind and flame, bringing God’s presence to all people.
We celebrate that we too are given the breath of the Holy Spirit and sent out to proclaim God’s redeeming love to all the world.

In today’s readings the risen Christ ascends into heaven and his followers are assured that the Spirit will empower them to be witnesses throughout the earth. The disciples were told to not gaze up into heaven to look for Jesus; instead, we find his presence among us as we proclaim the word and share the Easter feast.
We too long for the Spirit to enliven our faith and invigorate our mission.

Jesus does not abandon his followers. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus comes to abide with his disciples of every generation. As Pentecost draws near, we are reminded that the risen Christ dwells in us as the Spirit of truth. We receive this Spirit in baptism and pray that in our gathering around the Lord’s table the Spirit will transform us to be the body of the risen Christ in the world.

As we continue to celebrate the fifty days of Easter, today’s gospel includes Jesus’ promise that he goes to prepare a place for his followers in his Father’s house. Our baptism commissions us to share Jesus’ mission in the world. In words and deeds we bear witness to the risen Christ—our way, our truth, our life.

Today is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday. Jesus is called the “gate” of the sheep in today’s gospel. The risen Christ opens the way to abundant life. He anoints our heads with oil and guides us beside the still waters of our baptism. Each Sunday he spreads a feast before us amid the world’s violence and war.

Today’s gospel begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel! Yet the risen Christ walks with them and then opens their eyes in the breaking of the bread. Each Sunday our hearts burn within us as the scriptures are proclaimed and Christ appears to us as bread is broken and wine is poured.
The story of Emmaus becomes the pattern of our worship each Lord’s day.
