Coalition for the Protection of Indian Children and Families

Coalition for the Protection of Indian Children and Families Advocating for children and families hurt by the Indian Child Welfare Act. www.coalitionforindianchildren.org

The Coalition for the Protection of Indian Children and Families was established by a group of concerned citizens, both Native American Indians and non-Native, businesses and organizations – all troubled by the overwhelming number of cases where the Indian Child Welfare Act was, and continues to be, used in ways that preempt the best interest of the child. As a group, we are committed to the follo

wing:

• Best interest and constitutional rights of the child, first and foremost
• Rights of fit birth parents
• Protection for foster care and adoptive parents
• Respect for the need to preserve Indian heritage and culture

Our vision is that children of Indian descent will be granted greater access to loving, permanent homes regardless of heritage by minimizing the barriers caused by the Indian Child Welfare Act. Our values are:
• Children come first
• Respect all cultures
• Unity as one people
• Embrace and drive change
• Trust all involved

We are thrilled to share the news that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of the Capobiancos. A giant victory for children of Indian heritage and adoptive families. http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2013/06/26/adoptive-couple-it-was-huge-for-us/?hpt=ac_t3

Matt and Melanie Capobianco spoke exclusively on AC360 about their reaction to the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Baby Veronica's adoption. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 the adoption was proper and did not intrude on the federal rights of the father, a registered member of the Cherokee tribe.

Keeping the Capobianco family in our thoughts and prayers today as they await an answer on their ICWA adoption case from the US Supreme Court.
