Lutheran Campus Ministry - Twin Cities

Lutheran Campus Ministry - Twin Cities God loves everyone, no exceptions. 🌈
LCM-TC is the largest Christian q***r affirming ministry on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

We are a community of curious Christians (and those curious about this God stuff), gathered together by the Holy Spirit and set free to laugh with, love, question, and be in relationship with God and our neighbors. We welcome you to bring your whole selves to this community – we are shaped by every person who becomes a part of us and welcome your stories, gifts, and companionship. Though it says “

Lutheran” in our name, you don’t have to be a Lutheran – or even know anything about church – to get involved.

The first annual LCM Fun Run/Walk was a BLAST!

We ran ~5K from Grace University Lutheran Church to University Lutheran Church of Hope in Dinkytown and raised over $200 for our amazing ministry partners at Calvary Food Shelf. A shoutout to ULCH for hosting a pizza party for us with their outdoor bread oven. It was the perfect way to end our run!

Thanks to our runners and for their donations to CFS!

We have so much good work in front of us. Our current political and cultural climate can feel fragmenting, full of despair, and chaotic. And — there is so much Good at work, in our ministry, and in the world. We get to bear witness to the power of grace, mercy and hope as students encounter God in worship, in our outreach, and among in individual lives hope filled. This is good work. It’s important work. And it’s worth investing in.

It’s going to take a few larger gifts and many small gifts to get to our goal in the remaining four hours. Can you be a part of our work to embody the grace and mercy of Jesus in the midst of 60,000 young adults at the U? Head to givemn.org/lcmtc!

And our final story of the day! Emily is a sophomore studying Political Science, and is from a small town called Hyde Park in New York. She loves reading, spending time with family and friends, volunteering, learning about social justice issues, and learning new things. Emily also really loves going for walks in the morning around campus on the weekends when campus hasn’t come alive yet.

“From the very first second I stepped into Lutheran Campus Ministry I was welcomed with open arms and greeted with nothing but happy faces and positivity. I remember Dana welcoming me in with a smile on their face, Emilia (a student leader) inviting me to sit with her and a group of others because I was in a pew by myself, and I especially remember Pastor Kate saying my name when she gave me communion. I have never felt more at home in a room filled with unfamiliar faces and at the end of that night, I felt that there was a place for me somewhere on campus.

LCM is such a positive Christian voice on campus that people need to hear. You never know who could be looking for a faith community, or any community on campus. We want to make sure that they know they are welcome exactly as they are, and that God loves everyone no exceptions. This might just be the thing that changes their life, just like it changed mine.” -Emily Rydell

And we have a couple student stories left to share! Hannah, originally from Elgin, IL is in her second year at the U studying Kinesiology. She has two brothers – one older and one younger. She grew up attending Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and has spent her summers working at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center in Oregon, IL.

“Through LCM I have gained so many good friends and met a lot of amazing people. As someone who is not super outgoing, the fellowship time in the basement after worship was truly terrifying at first. Through LCM, along with some other experiences, I am significantly better at interacting with new people and I actually really enjoy that time in the basement – to simply be in community and get to know people.

My faith has been something that I have struggled with from time to time. Coming to LCM has allowed me to choose my faith, whereas before it was just part of my life. I love that I grew up in a church, but having the choice feels really significant in my faith journey. LCM was able to reignite my love of the church and while at this point, being a pastor is not part of my 10 year plan, finding a way to stay connected to the church beyond Sundays is.” -Hannah Kolakowski

We’re excited to continue to share what makes this ministry shine — the students! Say hi to Kathryn, a junior studying Kinesiology and dance! Growing up, she was involved at St Timothy Lutheran Church, ELCA, Saint Paul MN and she is most passionate about dance in her life, but other things that Kathryn loves include reading, music, and spending time with the people closest to her.

“What stood out to me as something special about LCM was that this is a community of people my age, who are choosing to be at church. The fact that everybody who is here chooses to be makes it feel like a more genuine community, and this community has had a huge impact on my faith.

These past couple of years have challenged my faith and relationship with God and in all honesty, I probably would have stopped going to church all together if I didn’t find LCM. What really keeps me coming back is being surrounded by people that inspire me to work towards healing my relationship with God and my faith, because even if not everyone is confident in their own personal faith, we make each other feel safe to not be confident.” -Kathryn Kuebler

We just reached over 50% of our goal for Give to the Max Day! Hear from Isaac, who is a senior studying Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, and is passionate about the environment and wants to be an advocate for creation. He enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and camping, and also has a competitive fire for sports (mainly track and field, but many other intramurals).

“LCM matters at the U because it is a place where anyone can find a home. LCM has such a wide range of students, which means that new folks can connect right away. It is also an important space for students to grow their faith, struggle with doubt, and navigate grief. LCM provides a supporting community that is fun and adventurous.

Through my time at LCM, I have gained leadership skills that have made me more confident – inside and out of church settings. LCM is the reason I was a camp counselor at Water's Edge Ministries - formerly GLLM, where I got to practice public speaking, and also where I discovered my vocation or call. LCM has made me want to stay involved in the church after graduating, as well as caring for God’s creation through my work.” -Isaac Dittrich

And it’s time for another story — from Sophia! Sophia is in her third year at the U of M studying Elementary Education. She loves spending time with her friends and family, crocheting, or out in nature!

“Before LCM, I was not religious, and this community has helped me re-find my religion. I had taken a break from religion because I had not found a church or a group that stood for the same values that I stood for, so I gave up entirely. Finding a place that reflected my beliefs changed my perspective toward religion as a whole. Now I know that there are places that worship God and are inclusive to everyone, and that was a wonderful thing to realize through LCM.

I continue coming to LCM because I feel a real sense of community here. Most other places, you go to church, worship, sing a few songs, and then leave. Here at LCM, there are way more opportunities to meet new people, spend time with friends, and get to know the pastor! It felt personal and close-knit here, and I really liked that aspect. I was not expecting to be welcomed so wonderfully by everyone here. It felt like so many people wanted me to be there and at the time I first joined LCM, I was really looking for that.” -Sophia Heffelbower

And now, we’ll hear from Jolie! Jolie is a junior studying Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and this is her second year being involved with LCM. She loves helping people feel welcomed and loved in any capacity, not just in LCM. Jolie enjoys cultivating deeper relationships and she loves learning about the uniqueness of each human she meets! Outside of LCM, she spends a lot of time studying and navigating her path to graduate school, where she hopes to study cancer biology. Jolie also enjoys running, spending time in nature, reading, cooking, drinking a good cup of coffee, and spending time with any and all dogs.

“The energy of our Wednesday pause student worship is so calming and peaceful. Sometimes, I can physically feel my worries leaving my chest. That energy alone would keep me coming back again and again.

One event in particular, though, helped me truly deepen my faith. I met with Pastor Kate shortly after my mom passed away, and I was struggling with the phrase ‘Everything happens for a reason,’ because I did not see a reason for my mom’s suffering and eventual death. Pastor Kate shared with me that God is with us in our suffering, and doesn’t make us suffer to make us learn, or to mold us into who we will become in spite of our hardships. This made me very emotional and that conversation is the closest I have ever felt to God. God experiences our suffering at our side, just as God experiences our joys. I felt so comforted in that moment, and I knew that I needed to deepen my involvement in LCM, if just to extend that comfort I found to other students who might be experiencing similar doubts.” -Jolie Stocke

And now, meet Melia! Melia is a junior at the U studying Applied Economics! She is a high-achieving, lifelong learner passionate about food and social justice. She also has a deep respect for the arts, spending her spare time consuming and creating music and literature.

“When I first came to LCM, I was at a crossroads in my life. I was trying to navigate making new friends, I was struggling with my mental health, and school was very challenging. I was at a point where I would wake up in the morning with nothing to look forward to. I could drag myself to church most Sundays still, but I didn’t think I could join a new group on campus. In my sophomore year, I ended up signing up to go on the Holden Village trip on a total whim – I didn’t know anyone, but I knew that I needed to do something drastic to find my way back to feeling purpose again. On this trip, I made friends and grew in my connection to God, and I have been coming to LCM ever since. The friendships I have made are some of the strongest I have ever had. From late night car rides to coffee chats, I have friends who I trust and who can trust me.” -Melia Lachinski

Now, meet Jake! Jake is in his third year at the U of M studying Chemistry, and is from a small town in northern Minnesota and grew up attending United in Christ Lutheran Church, ELCA, Eveleth in Eveleth, MN. He moved to Minneapolis with the hope of attending dental school. Jake loves to stay active by running, lifting, playing quadball, tennis, and pickleball. He also loves music and musicals, with the music at worship being one of his favorite parts of the service!

“LCM provided me a place with people I could share my joys and good news with, but also confide in during my struggles. The fall retreat during my freshman year was especially meaningful, as I was still pretty new at the time, and everyone was so friendly and did not exclude me from anything. My faith has deepened immensely because of LCM and this community is a place where any question can be asked and any idea can be challenged.” -Jake Bradach

Give to the Max Day is here and we need your support! We have a bold goal to support a bold mission — a mission that deepens and expands on the campus of the U of M more and more each year. We have $22,000 to raise today! Help us get there by visiting givemn.org/lcmtc.

Throughout the day, we’ll be sharing stories from our students and and we invite you to share these and invite your circles to join you in giving to this important community!

This morning, meet Emma! Emma is a fourth-year student at the University of Minnesota studying Special Education & Spanish, and has been attending LCM for four years – since the first week of her freshman year!

“All students should know that there is a community waiting for them that is truly ecstatic to get to know them and the stories they are bringing to the table. Students can show up to LCM expecting to be affirmed wholeheartedly by students, and all the while getting to learn more about their faith and a God who loves them unconditionally. This ministry helps students find belonging and value their truest selves.” -Emma Gray
