Patricia Torres Ray, MNIPL Legislative Director, shared one reason to make time for this forum:

‘People of color who are unfairly labeled as “risky” by insurance companies due to historical biases, socioeconomic assumptions, and a lack of investment in their neighborhoods are paying higher insurance premiums.’

Put simply, it’s a racial justice issue. Come to listen and learn how legislation could address discriminatory policies.

Two weeks from today - September 22 - Join in the Childcare for All Info Session hosted by Spirit Catholic Community. 6:30 PM. This is an important issue even if you don't have young children or grandchildren in your life: "The benefits extend far beyond the childcare sector. Reliable, affordable childcare allows parents — especially mothers — to stay in the workforce, pursue career opportunities, and support their families. Childcare is the infrastructure that makes every other job possible and strengthens our entire economy." Link to event in comments.

Some new things: Suzanne Reedy is leading us in sung prayer on Sunday, September 6, the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Welcome to this Ministry, Suzanne! She will lead us in her own setting of Psalm 95 as well as a sung Prayer of Jesus. We also found a new source for spiritual art this week. This image by Anna Strickland is the perfect accompaniment to this Gospel text. The second collection this week is for Haven Watch. Give them a follow. Homily is a community dialogue. We're really looking forward to eating food from Fat Lorenzo's, making new friends, and supporting a very worthy cause - the Minnehaha Food Shelf - October 22 at our home building New Branches MPLS.

Join us at our Fall Pasta Fundraising Dinner, which is taking place on Thursday, October 22nd. We're offering a pre-event price break: Purchase through October 16th, and tickets are $32; after that, tickets are $37 (children under age 5 eat free). Advance ticket purchase is required, so take advantage of the early-bird savings. Once again, we're fortunate to have neighborhood favorite Fat Lorenzo's providing the catering, and the evening will also include a prize drawing; purchase five tickets for $5 or 25 tickets for $20. We'll be gathering at New Branches (5011 31st Av. S., Minneapolis), which is home to three of our seven coalition congregations: Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church, Living Table United Church of Christ and Spirit Catholic Community. Last Sunday, Spirit Catholic Community friends made at least a hundred sandwiches - maybe more - for guests at Agate Housing and Services. Do you know about this program? You simply buy the bread, meat and cheese and assemble meal kits. You make an appointment to drop them off at one of the Agate shelters. This is a really good service activity for a small group to complete and it makes a big difference. Reach out to us if you want any tips about where to buy materials or other logistical shortcuts. Bags needed! You can also bring them to Spirit and we'll bring them over.

It's a win-win scenario: We need bags, and you probably need to get rid of bags. We're happy to receive your paper grocery bags — especially the ones with handles — and get them back in circulation. You can drop them in the big blue collection barrel at Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 East 50th Street in Minneapolis. Thanks!

This Sunday, the A-Men, self-described as "America's premiere liturgical boy band" 😄 lead us in sung prayer. Spirit's Social Justice and Outreach Coordinator Joan Howe-Pullis breaks open the Gospel, and a Saving Space Discussion happens after service. There's also a crew of folks making sandwiches for Agate Housing and Services. It's the Twenty-Second Sunday in ordinary time. 9:10 AM in person and livestream. Join us!
