Only two church stands remain at the Minnesota State Fair: Salem Lutheran, which has served Swedish egg coffee since 1949; and Hamline United Methodist, which opened in 1897.

“Sometimes the scope and the history feel like a lot of pressure to keep this alive,” said Eric Hoffer, pastor at Salem Lutheran.

Yet both stands press on, producing 680 pounds of ham loaf, close to 12,000 cups of coffee, and Swedish meatballs made from scratch each year.

About a month before the fair’s kickoff, Hoffer gave a sermon on the parable of the sower. It basically defined Salem’s mission in the middle of the cheese curds and karaoke contests.

“Really, our job descriptions don’t include state fair work,” Hoffer said. “But what a privilege to have this very unique soil to spread love. It’s not really up to us what happens after that.”
