The Church - History and Growth

Records and recollections show the village of Minden City was established around 1855. An early pioneer, Alfred Bunning was proprietor of the first store.

As the surrounding area was settled, Minden City grew, adding a sawmill, grist mill, and hardware store; and in 1862 a Post Office was opened with a Mr. Downer as Postmaster.

The Methodists rallied together for worship, and organized a church society in the township as early as 1856. Rev. E. Body was their guiding spirit. With their labor and efforts, the first Methodist Episcopal Church was completed round 1880. It was a beautiful red brick structure with a large bell tower, and was located at the west end of Main Street. Behind the church were barns to house the horses during services and the manse was next door to the west.

In 1951, just as Sunday services were about to commence, the stove overheated and the church burned to the ground. Brokenhearted, but strong in God’s Spirit, the congregation joined together and with many hours of labor and planning, rebuilt the present house of worship. Sunday, July 6, 1952, a formal opening was held to celebrate and consecrate their accomplishments.
