Have you ever been certain you heard God, only to discover that what you expected wasn’t actually what He said?

In “I Heard…”, Pastors Vonnie, Charmon, and Bryan unpack the difference between hearing God’s voice and correctly understanding what God is saying.

Jesus gives us an important warning in Luke 8:18: “Pay attention to how you hear.”

Sometimes the problem isn’t that God hasn’t spoken. The problem is that our limitations, expectations, impatience, experiences, and personal conditions have changed the way we interpreted what He said.

You can hear someone accurately and still understand them incorrectly.

Naaman almost walked away from his healing because God’s instructions didn’t match the miracle he had already imagined. His words reveal the problem: “I thought…”

How often do we do the same thing?

“I thought my marriage would look different.”

“I thought I would be further by now.”

“I thought God would answer this prayer differently.”

“I thought it would happen by now.”

But did God actually say that, or did we expect that?

This message challenges us to recognize how expectation can prewrite God’s answer and how impatience can make “wait” sound like “no.”

God said WAIT. We heard NO.

God said NOT YET. We heard NEVER.

God said STAY. We heard I’M STUCK.

Don’t let your timeline translate God’s silence.

God’s Word is also a seed, not a switch. There can be a process between what God speaks and what we eventually see. Just because you cannot see the Word working doesn’t mean the Word has stopped working.

We also examine the conditions we sometimes place on God before we are willing to trust what He says:

“Make it make sense.”

“Give me another sign.”

“Make me happy through it.”

“Remove everything difficult.”

“You said it, so do it now.”

But faith doesn’t require God to meet our conditions before we obey Him.

Faith hears the Word. Patience protects what you heard while you wait.

Before allowing disappointment, delay, or unmet expectations to rewrite what God said, go back and ask:

What did God actually say? What did I expect? And what did the wait make me add?

Faith that doesn’t help anybody is USELESS.

📖 James 2:15-17 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”, but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
