Join us on Holy Wednesday at 4:30 PM in the St. Joan of Arc Chapel for our Tenebrae service.

“The word Tenebrae is Latin for “darkness” or “shadows”, and the service has been celebrated for centuries. This service provides an extended meditation upon, and a prelude to, the events in our Lord’s life between the Last Supper and the Resurrection. The most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection, the hidden candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence.”

In addition to our regularly scheduled programs, I wanted to let you all know of some upcoming events at Canterbury Fellowship.

Tonight we will have our regular evensong at 4:30 followed by fellowship. Next week is Spring Break (and there was much rejoicing!), and so we will not meet as Canterbury Fellowship at all. Upon our return from said break, we'll have our monthly Eucharist on Wednesday, March 18, and we'll have a special guest homilist in alumnus Dr. Ethan Van Der Leek!

Last, during Holy Week, we don't offer a robust triduum at Canterbury, but we do have a Tenebrae service on the Wednesday of Holy Week in lieu of Evensong. This will take place on Wednesday, April 1 at 4:30 PM, followed by fellowship.

We invite you in the name of the Church to the observance of a holy Lent, beginning with our ecumenical Ash Wednesday service tomorrow at 4 PM in the Chapel of the Holy Family (in the AMU). This service of the word with imposition of ashes will be co-lead by Fr. Nathaniel Romano of the Office of Campus Ministry and Fr. Cover, and the Rev. Nate Irvine will be preaching. We also have a couple of Canterbury Fellowship folks helping with readings and imposition, so thank you!

We will plan on holding fellowship immediately following the service, though we know with many of us heavily involved in our own parishes, you may have more Ash Wednesday duties to get to. Those of us who can stick around will enjoy fried food and drinks at the Annex.

Join us tomorrow at 4:30 at the Joan of Arc Chapel for a short ecumenical prayer service to celebrate and observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This is our third annual observance, and it has been a true joy to unite with the other campus ministries at Marquette in Jesus' name. This service isn't much longer (if it is at all) than our normal Evensong, and will be followed by a reception with refreshments at the offices of Campus Ministry (AMU 236).

TLDR: If you show up at our normally scheduled time, we will still meet together for prayer and snacks! The service will just look different, and we'll be hanging out with folks from other campus ministries :)

Not only are we welcoming you back from Thanksgiving break, we are simultaneously entering into our final week of Canterbury Fellowship before the break.

As a reminder, this Wednesday is our Euchuarist for the month of December at 4:30 PM in Joan of Arc. Immediately following, we'll head out for a special version of fellowship - a little festive Christmas party gathering at MobCraft for pizza, food, and drinks (which is located at 505 S 5th St).

If you plan on attending the party, an RSVP is encouraged, not only so we can get a head count, but also so we can find out who might need a ride, and who might be able to provide one. RSVP link is in the comments.

Prayers for each of you as you navigate finals and wrapping up this semester!e

Join us for the next Canterbury Book Discussion on 19 November as we talk about Francis Spufford’s Light Perpetual. This will take place in lieu of our normal fellowship at the Annex, and snacks and drinks will be provided. We’ll walk over to Paul Cox’ nearby apartment together after Eucharist. Hope to see you there!

Many thanks to Vance Halfaker for organizing this! From Vance:

I hope you will be able to join me next month in reviving our book discussion tradition! This time around, I have suggested a novel: Light Perpetual by Francis Spufford. My thought is that reading fiction together will provide some welcome variety in the literary diet of those of us who are grad students in theology and a level entry point for those who are not. This book can open up big questions about God, death, suffering, and redemption. But it’s also fast-moving and full of humor. And Spufford, of course, is an Anglican author—one of our own!ist
