The Christian Couples M
inistry (CCM) of Brentwood Church of Christ can only be described as a natural progression of a journey begun in 2009 when then engaged Thomas and Clarene Mitchell attended a Black Marriage Day gathering at the Ambassador Hotel. Impressed by the mission of the yearly national event celebrating the virtues of marriage in the Black community, the Mitchells decided to make it their own church ministry work to celebrate the blessings and positive aspects of marriage in the Black community, where the sacred, centuries old institution has declined dramatically since the 1960s. Starting with their first Brentwood Black Marriage Day event in 2010—which drew 28 couples and singles (who are encouraged to attend), the Brentwood BMD has grown dramatically and now attracts 100+ attendees seeking confirmation of their vows while encouraging singles longing to experience the bliss of married life. After the overwhelming success of the 2013 BMD event, the Mitchells decided to expand their mission beyond a yearly event, creating the Christian Couples Ministry. It’s at these meetings couples meet to socialize and discuss the challenges of Black marriage in the face of today’s secular pressures and temptations. The CCM expanded its endeavors by including bi-monthly “couples’ night out.” CCM couples engage in activities designed to draw them closer together while also strengthening marriages by attending entertainment events that focus on marriage and positive relationships. These couples nights have included movies, bowing, Valentine’s Day dinner, nature walks, etc. The CCM will continue its mission of “Building a Strong Foundation” for families and the community through the holy institution of marriage.
