Southside Church of Christ Southside Church of Christ After temporarily meeting in Cudahy, a building was erected in 1962.

The Southside Church began in 1958 as an outreach of a north side congregation to reach out to seekers on the south side of the Milwaukee metro area. The congregation grew until it was able to appoint elders in 1975. Another milestone was reached in 1992 when a fellowship hall and classroom addition was built to handle our ever increasing needs. We look forward to continued growth as we continue to do the Lord’s work in Milwaukee.

In his book The Return of the Prodigal Son, Henri Nouwen writes, “The story of the prodigal son is the story of a God who goes searching for me and who doesn’t rest until he has found me. He urges and he pleads. He begs me to stop clinging to the powers of death and to let myself be embraced by arms that will carry me to the place where I will find the life I most desire” (82). I like Nouwen’s observation that this parable is a story about God. To be more specific, it’s a story about what God is doing in Jesus Christ, who has come to proclaim good news for the poor, freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, and set the oppressed free as Jubilean proclamation (cf. Luke 4:18-19). There’s a reason this parable follows two other short parables about a lost sheep and a lost coin.

“Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden.” - Deuteronomy‬ ‭4‬:‭23‬ ‭(NIV‬‬)

We only need a cursory reading of the Old Testament to observe how easy it was for Israel to forget and slowly but surely devolve into idolatry. But like Israel, it’s easy for Christians to forget as well. Or at least it is for me. Having a good memory is important for living as God’s people.

The formation of our memories is one reason I love gathering with my church every Sunday, where the story of God’s redemptive acts in Christ are remembered. Through song, prayers, reading and preaching of scripture, and interacting with Christ and his church, we remember what God has done and who God has made us to be. This fellowship culminates with the sharing of the bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ, which reminds us of our baptism into Christ—his body and blood—whereby God made us to be his new creation.

I need that remembering and so do you. I need to be reminded that I am a new creation in Christ and so do you. It’s why we need the church as the body Christ, lest we forget and slowly but surely devolve into idolatry.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” - Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭15‬-‭19‬ ‭(NIV‬)

Sometimes, whether due to our own sin or circumstances beyond us, we find ourselves in the depths of death.* It’s circumstances that seem like a hopeless pit, where we’re incapable of doing anything to change our circumstances. But that’s also when we can learn what is perhaps the most powerful prayer we’ll ever pray. . . just two words, “Lord, help.”

The Lord’s help is the only hope Jonah has. He’s not going to get out of the sea by his own power and volition. And there’s no amount of merit or good works, including repentance, that makes him deserving of such help or that obligates the Lord to help him.

But Jonah knows a couple of things about who the Lord really is. First of all, he knows that the Lord is a sovereign God whose reach and power are without limitation. Jonah knows that the Lord is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and compassion. So unlike what some of Jonah’s contemporaries believed about the underworld, Jonah knows that not even the space and time of the underworld are beyond the reach and power of the Lord. Secondly, Jonah knows that the Lord is a God whose heart beats to the tune of redemption. Jonah knows this because he’s a Hebrew who knows the story of Israel, how God redeemed the helpless Jewish people from the oppression of the mighty Egyptians.

So knowing all this to be true of God, Jonah cries out for help. As Jonah prays, “When my life was ebbing away, I remember you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple” (Jon 2:7).

Do we believe that, even when our life seems to be ebbing away, our prayers, crying out for help, will reach God?

Tomorrow I will continue with a sermon series on Jonah, preaching a message for the Southside Church that’s based on the second chapter and called “salvation.” My prayer is that God will strengthen our church with courage and conviction from his Spirit to continue being a community of believers who will embody the gospel and, in turn, be a place where new seeker find a welcome that invites them into the life of Christ.

I always love preaching on Easter Sunday because it’s an opportunity to focus specifically on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the hope we have.

Our faith, what we believe about Jesus Christ, gives substance to our hope. At the same time, our faith is strengthened by our hope. That is, having the hope that God has made our salvation possible through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ allows us to continue living by faith, even amid the difficulties we all encounter throughout life. Is it any wonder that the early Christians began referring to writings like John’s account of Jesus Christ as good news or the gospel?

This coming Easter Sunday, I plan to begin a four-week series called Good News from John 20-21. My prayer is that our faith will be strengthened by the hope we have in Jesus Christ, giving us the courage to keep living by faith as a testimony to Jesus Christ.
