The Capuchins trace their origins back to St. Clare of Assisi (d. 1253). They began as a reform of the Franciscan Order in 1528, trying to live Franciscan ideals that they felt had gotten lost in the years after his death. The early Capuchins strove to live more simply, serve the poor, practice a contemplative prayer life, and preach the Word of God as St. Francis had done. The Capuchin Order bega

n in Italy, but has spread to nearly every region of the world, today numbering approximately 11,000 members, making it one of the largest religious orders in existence in the Catholic Church. In 1856, two diocesan priests from Switzerland – Francis Haas and Bonaventure Frey – admired the Capuchins so much in their homeland that they desired to establish the Capuchin Order elsewhere. Looking for a home that resembled their native Switzerland, Francis and Bonaventure settled in Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin, which became the founding site of the Capuchin Order in the United States. The first few years were rocky, but eventually the small community grew with new members. There in Mt. Calvary, Francis and Bonaventure built not only a friary, but eventually a seminary for the religious training of new members. Lawrence Seminary was opened in 1860 as “The Convent Latin School” and continues in existence today as the largest residential high school seminary in the United States. The Capuchin Order grew rapidly in the United States to the point where it became necessary to divide the friars into different regions or “provinces”. Today, there are seven Capuchin provinces in the United States. The Province of St. Joseph covers the upper Midwest and numerically is the largest province in America with approximately 170 friars who serve in communities from Detroit to Montana, with overseas ministries in Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama, and Middle East.

Congratulations to our new deacons!

On the Saturday before Pentecost our Capuchin brothers, Br. Jose and Br. Loyola, were ordained to the diaconate by Archbishop Jeffery Grobb.

In his homily the Archbishop reminded Br. Jose and Br. Loyola that service and humility stand at the heart of all ministries in the Church.

As deacons, Brs. Jose and Loyola will be serving the people of God in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Milwaukee and Our Lady fo the Holyland in Mt. Calvary.

May God bless them in their ministries and in their preparation for priesthood!

Deo Gratias! - Thanks be to God!

This joyful phrase became so connected with St. Felix of Cantalice that many referred to him simply as "Br. Deo Gratias."

As a Capuchin friar serving the streets of Rome, St. Felix greeted every person, every hardship, every blessing with gratitude to God. Whether he was begging alms for the friars, serving the poor, joking with his friend, St. Phillips Neri, or encouraging those in need, his humble spirit pointed others to Christ.

St. Felix reminds us that holiness is not only found in extraordinary works, but in ordinary faithfulness lived with joy, humility, and thanksgiving.

Let us all echo his simply prayer. Deo gratis!

"After the Lord gave me brothers..."

Before missions. Before preaching. Before the friars spread across the world, the friars were called to fraternity.

They were men who would walk together, pray together, serve together. Men who would give up everthing to follow Christ and discover a joy greater than anything the world could promise them.

"We desired nothing more."

Deep down, every man desires brotherhood, desires fraternity, desires something worth giving his life too.

St. Francis found it in the Gospel and you can too.

The world tells us that greatness comes from being seen, admired, and successful.

St. Leopold Mandić shows another way.

He spent most of his life hidden in a tiny confessional, listening patiently to the wounds, sins, and struggles of ordinary people. Though his missionary desire was never brought to fruition, God showed him a new mission field in the human heart.

Following the example of Jesus, he gave light penance to others while doing great penances on behalf of those who came to him.

Through a quiet life of Mercy, thousands encountered the love of Christ.

Holiness often looks small in the eyes of the world,
but the saints remind us that a life poured out in love is never wasted.

St. Leopold Mandić, pray for us!

Love for Christ is more than words. It is a life of fidelity the teachings of the holy Gospel and to our relationship wit God. The love that makes us disciples leads us to a life of service, prayer, and virtue.

Christ continues to call men to follow Him closely. The Holy Spirit is still raising up witnesses of hope for the world. 🔥

May the Holy Spirit guide us and teach us to follow Him more closely each day.

Fr. Nathan was recently invited to in Chicago to give a presentation on Catholic Social Teaching!

The Gospel is never just an idea that we believe or a philosophy we ascribe to, it is a life we live. Christ calls us not only yo prayer and worship, but also to feed the hungry, care for the poor, defend the dignity of every person, and love our neighbor in concrete ways.

If we focus only on the spiritual while neglecting to live the full teachings of Jesus, we risk living only a partial Gospel life.

To be a disciple of Christ is to allow the Gospel to transform every part of our lives.

The way of discernment is not always a straight path.

When Solanus Casey faced difficulties with language in seminary, he was asked to leave and consider a call to religious life. What initially looked like a failure became an invitation to a deeper surrender to the will of God. This surrender eventually led him to the Capuchin friars and, ultimately, to sainthood.

In a world filled with uncertainty, Jesus speaks directly to the heart. "Do not be troubled."

He does not promise a life without difficulty, but a relationship with him.

To be a disciple of Christ is not simply about believing a set of propositions. It is the call to walk a path of life, to know and love the person of Jesus Christ, to give your life to the one who leads us to the Father.

This is the call of the Capuchin Friar Minor:
▪️to trust Jesus completely.
▪️to walk in His way with simplicity and joy.
▪️to help others encounter the living God.

The world needs witnesses. It needs men willing to give everything so others may know the love of the Father.

Is Christ calling you to follow Him more closely?
