Thanks to our Presbyterian Coalition Partners, May Nay Htoe and Ma Ka Lah and their children are about to move into the brand new home they helped build in 2025. They have face incredible challenges including unsafe housing from their time in a refugee camp in Thailand to their current rental in Milwaukee.
“We want to have a better house, new construction,” Ma Ka Lah said. “It will mean better health for the kids and a better environment. It will be a clean house with no roaches. The condition is really bad.”
At one point, May Nay Htoe & Ma Ka Lah received a letter instructing them to go to the hospital to check for lead levels in their blood due to lead exposure in their home.
“We don’t have to go to the hospital when we move,” Ma Ka Lah said. “There was lead in the kids’ blood.”
Their children are thrilled about the move and are eagerly anticipating their new home.
“They are so happy; they can’t wait. They keep asking about it,” Ma Ka Lah said. “Our kids are happy they have their own house and can do whatever they want to do.”

Thanks to our Interfaith Coalition Partners, future homeowner Billy is looking forward to moving into the brand new home he helped build in 2025.
As part of the program, Billy completed sweat equity hours, Habitat’s unique alternative to a traditional down payment. These hours are spent on the build site helping construct homes or volunteering in our Habitat ReStores. Billy was excited to roll up his sleeves and get involved.
“I can learn some carpentry,” Billy said. “I like learning new things; I like challenges...The aspect of actually helping build it, that’s exciting to me.”
Because Milwaukee Habitat builds and sells brand-new homes, Billy watched his house take shape from the ground up.
“Normally you buy a house and it’s already done when you go the traditional way,” Billy said. “In this program you see it come to light. I like that aspect of it.”

Happy New Year! Thanks to all our faith and community partners - 32 families celebrated the holidays in their brand new Habitat homes for the first time. We're looking forward to lots more of this in 2026...
