At the end of his Angelus prayer on Sunday from Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo XIV called again for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urged the international community to “observe humanitarian law and respect the obligation to protect civilians.” The pope also condemned collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force and the forced displacement of populations.

Leo has made numerous calls for a ceasefire in Gaza since becoming pope, including in his first Sunday address as pontiff in May.

The renewed call comes after an Israeli shell struck the Holy Family Catholic Church on July 17, killing three people and wounding several more. The compound is home to the only Catholic church in Gaza and one that the late Pope Francis regularly communicated with through daily phone calls with their parish priest, who was also injured in the strike. The compound had sheltered hundreds of Palestinians seeking refuge amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying Israel “deeply regrets that a stray ammunition hit Gaza’s Holy Family Church.” The pope and Netanyahu also had a phone conversation on Friday following the attack.

"The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches, meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 18-24 June 2025, gathers in deep lamentation and outrage as the crisis in Palestine and Israel escalates to levels that flagrantly violate international humanitarian and human rights law as well as the most basic principles of morality."

Peace on earth, not war on children

You are invited to an afternoon with the Rev. Khader El Yateem, Executive Director
Service and Justice, an office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Please join us on Sunday, June 1st at 2:00 pm at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 19th and Wisconsin.

We will listen as the Rev. Khader El Yateem, a Palestinian
American and a leader of a large Christian denomination (Director of Service and Justice in The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) shares his perspective on the current war in Gaza, West Bank, and Israel and the United States complicity in the carnage.

Rev. El Yateem will then welcome questions and enter dialogue with
all attending, especially the young adult leaders of various faith traditions. All are welcome. We hope for strong participation from the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities here in Milwaukee.

This event is sponsored by Wisconsin Christians for Justice in Palestine.

It is free and open to the public. Please share!
