Looking for a Wiccan teacher ....
Author : Moria Scott
I know Karen Dales has covered this in her videos in the past but does bare repeating. With Samhain approaching, an interest in Witchcraft and Paganism tends to ramp up. TikTok videos abound but often the information is not all that accurate. There are also so-called Witch Schools that will, for a price, teach a basic course. Some even offer an initiation. Here's the kicker: you cannot put a price on spiritual education and training. They are gifts to be passed on. This begs the question, just HOW does one initiate someone in chatroom? The answer is simple, it cannot be done.
So, that said, where does one go to get one-on-one training, if one is so inclined? One asks. One approaches and asks. If you don't know who to ask, put the word out that you want to take things further, attend open rituals and see the priesthood who conduct those rites in action, so to speak. If you like what you see, then ask for a chat.
Discussing the possibilities of a student-teacher relationship IS a two-way street. The teacher is interviewing you and you are doing likewise with them. If after a discussion or discussions your gut tells you that the teacher is not in alignment with your values, it is OK to move on. No harm, no foul, for the simple reason that choosing to move forward with learning is one of the most important and personal decisions one can make. If you are uncomfortable with the person you have sought out, you have the right to say no and step back. And THAT decision must be respected. How much will you learn if you are not comfortable with the person in charge of your learning?
This is but one aspect of the Craft of the Wise - to be smart about how you go about your learning, which individual will you choose to teach you and setting your boundaries as to how far you want to go. Not all 101 classes lead to individual training, nor does individual training automatically come with initiation at the end. This is an organic process that requires your input and how you feel about what is being taught and how you are learning.
So if you're looking for a teacher, learn more about the person ahead of time and then if the spirit moves you, (see what I did there?) ask. For as my Buddhist friend once told me many years ago, "if one never asks, the answer will always be no."
