Big Creek Cemetery History
The Big Creek Cemetery was first established in 1886 and sits on 6.55 acres with about 650 graves going back to the mid-1800's. Donated by Dabney and Hepsey Crenshaw this land was part of a 640 acres previously owned by Dabney and Charles Crenshaw's father, Joel Crenshaw who arrived in Shelby County about 1820. The property was originally a Crenshaw family cemetery comprising one-fourth of an acre at what is the north end of the cemetery. There you will find the oldest of grave markers, with some graves thought to be marked by the old cedar trees which still stand today. Dabney and Hepsey generously gifted the property for the purpose of a burial place on May 8th of 1886 to the Big Creek Cemetery trustees. The 2019 board of trustees is composed of members Kent Crenshaw, Kenny Crenshaw, Jeannie Ticer and J.D. Crenshaw, Carol Craig Clark, Dayna Jones and Alex Pitsos.
