Nehemiah 1:1-3 ESV
The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah.

Now it happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the citadel, 2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.”

John 12:1-8 ESV
1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

Luke 10:38-42 ESV
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Looking back on this trip to the Dominican Republic, I truly feel blessed that God gave me the opportunity to be a part of it. I knew it would be a great experience, but I never expected it to impact me as deeply as it did. Watching the joy of the children in Bartey Margarita, the faith of the girls at Pasitos de Jesús, and the willingness of our own youth group to serve with such humble hearts reminded me that you don’t need to have much to experience the goodness of God. One of the greatest blessings was seeing our youth group grow throughout the week—not only in maturity, but also in their confidence to step out and share Christ. Whether we were painting a house in the heat, sharing our testimonies, leading worship, or simply playing with kids, everyone served with joy, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have experienced it alongside them.

One moment that especially impacted me was visiting the nursing home. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the elderly, and while it was difficult to see some of their physical and mental struggles, their joy and love for Jesus never faded. That visit reminded me how easy it is to spend our lives chasing success or building our own name, while forgetting how many people God places in our path to love and serve. The trip gave me a new perspective on humility and on what really matters. As we leave, I’m definitely sad to say goodbye, but I’m also completely at peace knowing that God was working long before we arrived and will continue working long after we leave. I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity, for the friendships that grew stronger, and for the ways God changed my own heart throughout the week. God is holy, God is good, and He is always at work.

Monday update: Today was our last full day in the Dominican Republic. We left from Score at around 8:30 and headed to where our boat was. When we arrived, there were many people-a lot more than last year- and we started towards the island. Before the island, we jumped off the boat and snorkeled. There were a couple small jellyfish, so there were little stings but nothing too crazy. After that, we arrived on the island and some good food: rice, potatoes, spaghetti, chicken, steamed vegetables, and bread. While eating, we were all swarmed by bees, especially Wh**ey whom Jaden spilled Sprite on. The rest of the time on the island we spent in the water talking to each other, playing chicken, doing flips, and playing games with strangers. After a fun time, we left the island, and while on the boat, many of us talked to a young Argentinian women about her life and religion, telling her more about Christ. On the way home, a few of us felt sea sick, like Macklin who threw up off the side of the boat. We arrived back at score, played in the pool, and did some street ministry. We found a couple of kids, and we played baseball, threw Frisbee, and did a fan favorite, "Pato, pato, ganso." We ended the night with some group games before going to sleep to wake up to an early sunrise service.
