How often do we defend the way we’ve always done things simply by saying, "Because that’s just how it’s done"?

Yesterday, we looked at Matthew 15 and the clash between Jesus and the religious establishment over tradition. In the following scene, Jesus crossed social, cultural, and traditional lines in going to Tyre and Sidon (places where tradition would say no self-respecting rabbi would go) to offer radical mercy. In his encounter with the Canaanite woman, he reminds us that the heart of tradition is the ever-expanding, boundary-crossing love of God!

Thrifty Thursday on a Monday!

Food Pantries all over our area report shortages and great needs to help feed families. PUBLIX has some GREAT DEALS on BOGO’s through tomorrow, August 11. Some of these items are regularly requested for the GWVH Staff Food Pantry that we serve. Please, if you are heading to Publix, pick up a few items to share with others! You will be blessed. [I will be happy to take them to the GWVH Staff Food Pantry.]

Yesterday, we looked at Romans 9 and explored how Paul wrestled with difficult questions about his people, the Israelites, but instead of letting hard questions fracture his faith, Paul modeled what it looks like to take the unknown and anchor it firmly in what he knew for absolute certain: that the word of God has not failed.

Just like ancient navigators reading hidden ocean swells in unknown waters or Dietrich Bonhoeffer holding fast to Christ from a dark prison cell, we are invited to do the same. When the maps run out and the storms close in, we hold onto the cross, the resurrection, and a God who refuses to let us go.

Yesterday, we turned to Romans 8 where Paul speaks of all of creation groaning in expectation for our future redemption. We saw that faith isn’t a spiritual painkiller meant to numb the hard seasons of life. Instead, it’s like physical therapy wherein we are stretched and strengthened, thereby giving our present struggles a profound purpose as we look toward what God is building.
