'Faith is something we live'

On Sunday, Michael Marchand shared with the congregation his experience on the Jonathan Daniels Youth Pilgrimage: A Journey through the Civil Rights Movement, with teens from the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire, led by the Rev. Kelly Sundberg Seaman and the Rev. George Swenson.

Who was Jonathan Daniels? An Episcopal seminarian from Keene who answered the call of Martin Luther King Jr. for students and clergy to join the civil rights movement in Selma, AL, where he was killed by a highway worker and part-time deputy sheriff, in the act of shielding 17-year-old Ruby Sales from a racist attack.

What we saw: Birmingham Civil Rights Museum and the 16th Street Baptist Church. We stayed in St. Paul's rectory in Selma and went back and forth between Selma and Montgomery checking out museums and such. We saw the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Seeing all these historical landmarks and museums truly made this history feel real.

What I learned: Faith isn't just going to church or believing things; it can also mean standing up for other people. Courage doesn't mean you are not afraid. Jonathan Daniels showed what it means to put your beliefs into action, and that's why I find his sacrifice a remarkable story.

Personal connection: Before the trip I had a fascination with the culture of the Deep South when it comes to football, barbecue and fishing, but now I realize the poverty, corruption and sacrifice that went on, and it made me think about how I can serve people in my own community. Jonathan Daniels is a great example of what service really is.

In conclusion: I am extremely grateful to this parish and the diocese for making it possible for me to go on this trip. I learned a lot of history and met a lot of great people. Faith isn't just something we say; it's something we live.

Many thanks to the gardener with the incredible eye who so lovingly tends these pots and keeps our entrance looking beautiful. ❤️⛪

Renovation updates

The two cabinets for the new coffee station are in place, completing the installation of cabinets.
Trim for the serving windows is almost complete, after which the counter installer can begin the templating.
The new flooring has been purchased.

We have visited the construction site several times, and each time are amazed at the scope of work that goes into such a project. We see the cabinets and the counters, of course, but so much depends on the details that no one can see: installing drainage under the floor, mouse-proofing walls, reconstructing the lower wall which was excavated in order to install the plumbing from the kitchen to the coffee station, finding just the right stain for the baseboards, all done with the diligence and love that Tom Sommers puts into every measurement, every swing of his hammer and twist of his screwdriver.

Notes from Fr. Ed
Cooler weather seems to have arrived, and with it, the schools are back, and our own Isabelle Miller will soon be off to college! Congratulations to all our students. We wish you a wonderful semester ahead, rich with learning and new experiences.

This coming Sunday is our final worship in the park for this year. Despite the town sprinkler system, it has been a wonderful summer outside. Thank you to everyone who has made it special—and the flowers each Sunday have been simply delightful.

I’ve been reflecting on last Sunday’s scripture and Jesus’s command to us to take up our crosses, deny ourselves, and follow Him. I notice that each of us must take up our own crosses—not anybody else’s. This suggests our sacrifice in following Jesus is individual and personal; yours will not be the same as mine. A cross also suggests shame as well as cost. Sometimes being a follower of Jesus means that others think less of us or look down on us. My faith has cost me some friendships, and perhaps you can relate to that experience too.

And yet, I can confess that for every loss, there has been abundant blessing. Truly, if I have lost one way of life—one path through the world with all its myriad decisions, twists, and turns—I have lived a different life, hand in hand with Jesus. This new life has led me through troubles and trials, and yet, the sense of God’s presence has made up for it all. It’s a life of wonder, worship, and praise, and I wouldn’t swap it for the world.
