Pentecost Morning Prayer Reflections
May 24, 2026
Three Poems
Pentecost by James Montgomery (1771-1854)
Lord God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,
As on the day of Pentecost,
Descend in all thy power.
We meet with one accord
Within this hallowed place,
And wait the promise of our Lord,
The Spirit of all grace.
Like mighty rushing wind
Upon the waves beneath,
Move with one impulse every mind;
One soul, one feeling breathe;
The young, the old inspire
With wisdom from above;
And give us hearts and tongues of fire,
To pray, and praise, and love.
Spirit of light, explore
And chase our gloom away,
With lustre shining more and more
Unto the perfect day.
Spirit of truth, be Thou,
In life and death, our guide:
O Spirit of adoption, now
May we be sanctified.
Pentecost by Malcolm Guite (born 12 November 1957)
Today we feel the wind beneath our wings
Today the hidden fountain flows and plays
Today the church draws breath at last and sings
As every flame becomes a Tongue of praise.
This is the feast of fire, air, and water
Poured out and breathed and kindled into earth.
The earth herself awakens to her maker
And is translated out of death to birth.
The right words come today in their right order
And every word spells freedom and release
Today the gospel crosses every border
All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace
Today the lost are found in His translation.
Whose mother-tongue is Love, in every nation.
A Pentecost Prayer by Bishop Rob
Come, Holy Spirit,
Embrace me and hold me when I am feeling anxious, afraid, or lost.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Enkindle in me the fire of God’s love for whatever and whomever I meet.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Purge me from any sin or any distraction that would have me forget you are nearer than my own breath and heartbeat.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Show me the glory of your greening presence in all created beings, living or not, teeming or unmoving. Guide my heart and hands to further your healing, restoration and renewing of this glorious and wounded planet that is yours, not ours.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Fashion my will with your strength that my life will invite—and not fruitlessly shame—others to the grace of Jesus Christ.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Comfort those burdened with grief, sorrow, fear, confusion, or anger. Be their soothing balm today.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Guide me to a new and steady vision of justice and good in this society, especially when I cannot or I refuse to hope, or see, or work for it.
Come, Holy Spirit,
Enter the cracks and brokenness, the failures and shortcomings of my life and this world. Fill my soul with the forgiveness and peace that the Risen Jesus breathes on those who follow him
Come, Holy Spirit,
Help me rejoice in finding you to be the source and the homecoming of all my prayers, all my actions, indeed my entire life—in the past, in the present, and for all eternity.
Come, Holy Spirit.
