Spiritual breakthrough – the woman at the well
By: Pastor Dan Reed Waters of Mercy Church March 21, 2020
It is time for a spiritual breakthrough for our nation. This will happen on a one-by-one restoration or empowerment.
We can tell everyone how bad it is, but I prefer to look ahead and see how good it can be!
This will come by a BREAKTHROUGH!
Let’s look together. It is not about how much you have already done, it is about what he has already done for you.
As a reference to this, I would like to take a look at the encounter by Jesus and a Woman that was in need in help, and did not know she needed help.
Many are going to church and attending services and do not know they need help.
Lets read a few verses from John 4:
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
Let’s take a look at the Samarian woman that was at the well of Jacob. Let’s take a look at the situation and see if we can agree on a few things about this woman.
1. She was bound by sin and did not know it
2. She did not think there was a method of deliverance
3. She had a life full of displeasure, life of divorces,
4. Had several bad relationships
5. Just to get water, she had to work
6. She was waiting on the messias, which is called Christ
7. She was convinced that when she met Jesus, it was worth telling everyone else the news!
8. She had a belief in prophets to look forward
9. When she found out about this Jesus, she ask him for water. Selfish reasons?
10. She was excitable lady
Knowing all this, what can we do? We can determine if any of these 10 items describe us. Be honest with yourself.
If you can clearly state the problem, Christ can state the answer.
Seems easy to do, but many times we do not want to admit the problem. We sometimes feel ashamed or that our admittance will bring more problems or will mean we have failed. Accept the fact that we can be better and pray for good council.
Realize when God has “had enough” of your reluctance to admit your fault. Remember when you were a child and your parent may have told you, “ I am getting tired to telling you the same thing, over-and-over. We can define a fault as something that is inhibiting us from being a positive influence in life.
Realize who you represent in your life. We have to represent our Father and his Son. We have to represent them everywhere and in everything we do. Be kind and patient all day, even at home with our spouse and Children.
Do you think Jesus does not understand? You may want to challenge Jesus? This is what the woman at the well said, I don’t have a husband, she said. Jesus said you have rightly said, then he told her she has had five, and the one she was with is not her husband, either.
Realize what Gifts God has given YOU. Jesus said, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink thou wouldes have asked of him and he would have given the living water. Where did this attribute come from?
Jeremiah 2:13 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
And
Zachariah 14:8 8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
Would you like to feel the excitement that the woman of Samaira felt? If so, you may be looking for that excitement of revival or restoration. I am not saying you don’t already have it. But, you may be saying, “I can’t get any better.” Wow, if that second one is you, I say keep reading.
A quick review of some of the things on the list. If you feel you are a failure at relationships, not worth much to anyone, just going through life one day at a time without making any waves, you know the truth and believe that God exist but not sure if this is for you, don’t feel like it is time to settle down, know enough about Jesus to get to heaven, happy with the minimum in life, and still looking, let me suggest you specify a place for your altar.
Take some time to pour out your fears, failures, dislikes, and problems to the Lord. Clearly state your shortcomings, if you have any. Then ask for help and council from him.
After you have cleared the air with this, begin to tell him all the things you are thankful. Remember, Jesus does love you and cares about your family. After you get this resolved, pray for your country and those around you.
If you don’t attend a church, please see if you can find one that you can visit and fall in love with. Most services are less than 2 hours per week. Jesus gave his life for us, maybe we can sacrifice a couple hours a week to gather and encourage one another for him.
Signing off for the day,
Pastor Dan Reed
