Our Savior Lutheran Church-Milford, IL Founded in 1932, we join together in worship to receive God's gifts to us each Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.

Coffee Fellowship, Sunday School, and Adult Bible Class follow at 10:30 a.m. Our services are broadcast live on WIQI 95.9 FM and WHPO 101.9 FM. A member congregation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, founded in 1932 and as passionate as ever about sharing the love of Christ with others.

341. What is the purpose of excommunication?

Excommunication is intended to show people who refuse to repent the seriousnesse of their sin and ultimately to rescue such persons from eternal condemnation and win them back to Christ. Thus, they are always welcomed and encouraged to hear God's Word.

1 Corinthians 5:4-5 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 5:13 God judges those outside. "Purge the evil person from among you."

Galatians 6:1-2 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

340. What is excommunication?

Excommunication is the exercise of the binding key. In it, the Church announces to impenitent sinners that their sins are not forgiven before God and that they are excluded from the Lord's Supper and every other privilege of fellowship in the Christian Church except hearing God's Word.

"Excommunication is also pronounced against the openly wicked and the haters of the Sacraments" (Ap XI 61).

Matthew 18:15-18 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

339. How is the Office of the Keys related to the proclamation of the Gospel?

The Office of the Keys is a special, God-given way of applying the Gospel to the individual. "God is superabundantly generous ni His grace: First, through the spoken Word, by which the forgiveness of sins is preached in the whole world [Luke 24:45-47]. This is the particular office of the Gospel. Second, through Baptism. Third, through the holy Sacrament of the Altar. Fourth, through the power of the Keys. Also through the mutual conversation and consolation of brethren, 'Where two or three are gathered' (Matthew 18:20) and other such verses [especially Romans 1:12]" (SA III IV).

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I among them.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the naem of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

338. Who receives the forgiveness given in Absolution?

All sinners who are sorry for their sins (contrition) and trust in Christ as their Savior (faith) receive this forgiveness.

Psalm 32:5 I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD," and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Mark 1:15 The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of GOd is at hand, repent and believe in the Gospel.

337. Who is not to be forgiven?

Those who do not repent and believe in Jesus Christ are not to be forgiven as long as they continue in their impenitent unbelief.

Matthew 18:17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the Church. And if he refuses to listen even to the Church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

336. Who is to be forgiven?

All those who repent and ask for forgiveness of their sins are to be absolved.

Acts 3:19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.

335. Why do we refer to this authority as the power of the Keys?

Even as keys lock and unlock, so the authority to forgive and retain sins opens and closes Heaven. Jesus gives two keys to His Church: One key absolves from sin and opens Heaven. The other key retains sins and closes Heaven to those who are impenitent.

Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.

334. What special authority has Christ given to His Church on earth?

God alone forgives sins through Christ Jesus. Christ has given to His Church--and only to His Church, that is, the whole redeemed people of God--the authority to forgive the sins of all who repent and to withhold His forgiveness from those who will not repent.

"Everything, therefore, in the Christian Church is ordered toward this goal: we shall daily receive in the Church nothing but the forgiveness of sin through the Word and signs, to comfort and encourage our consciences as long as we live here" (LC II 55).

Matthew 18:18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.

John 20:22-23 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld."
