I post the transcript of my sermons on our church's website. You might miss a line or want to go back to see what I spoke at your convenience.
You might catch the chiasm I inserted near the end of the sermon as well!

The Fourth Watch ends with light. The Fourth Watch, if you remember, is roughly the period between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM, the time of night when Jesus walked on water out to his disciples who were exhausted after struggling with their oars for hours against the wind and waves. The Fourth Watch was whe...

The sermon on Sunday is a flashback to the Fourth Watch and how it is like Paul's description of the spiritual life of the Romans - and us. The scripture reading is Romans 13:8-14.

Paul doesn't just tell us to wake up. He tells us what to put on.

Wake up. Put on Christ. Live in the light.

We are continuing our study of Romans chapter 13. Sunday's scripture reading is Romans 13:8-14.
Love for One Another
8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not murder; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.
An Urgent Appeal
11 Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is already the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone; the day is near. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us walk decently as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in illicit s*x and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Tumble out of bed,
Working nine to five, we're just
Islands in the stream.

How did Douglas Adams take five books to give us the question for the answer to the Life, Universe, and Everything? (It actually took ten million years to come up with the question, according to the "trilogy"!)

Our national organization doing relief work.

PDA is starting a new series: at the beginning of each week, we will share a new prayer as we recognize the long-term impacts of natural and human-caused disasters. We invite you to share your specific prayer concerns in the comments, if you feel called, so we may pray together as a community. This week, we lift up those who have lost their homes to wildfires.
Let us pray,
Loving God, we pray that your presence may be near to those who have lost their homes and much of what filled them due to wildfires. Comfort them in their grief and provide for their daily needs. Lead them gently toward a place to settle again. Amen.

We continued in Romans 12, building on the "Living Sacrifice" Paul urged us to give in last week's sermon. That was the answer to what we offer God. This week, we looked for the question: How do we provide God with ourselves as a living sacrifice?

August 30, 2026, worship, with sermon, "Live Graciously."
