THE BIBLE contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveler's map, the pilgrim's staff, the pilot's compass, the soldier's sword, and the Christian's charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.

HOW TO HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR
Happy New Year isn't just about luck; it’s about adopting habits, attitudes, and decisions that promote your well-being. Here are some ideas to start the year with joy and purpose:
1. Put Christ First. Let Him direct your path daily. Take stock in studying God’s word daily. Be grateful for the positives blessings and learn from the negatives to keep growing.
2. Set realistic goals for your Spiritual life. Keep a prayer journal to follow your growth. Define clear and achievable objectives for the year. Break them into small steps and celebrate each progress.
3. Spend time with your loved ones and nurture relationships that bring you joy. Show gratitude and appreciation for those who support you. Let them know how good God is.
4. Take care of your physical and mental health. Adopt healthy habits like exercising, eating balanced meals, and getting good sleep. Practice gratitude, smile more, laugh more. Look for funny people and things that make you laugh. Laughter is a good medicine-Proverbs 17:22
5. Enjoy the little things. Find happiness in simple moments, like a sunrise, a good conversation, or the little bird that tweets. God put them there for our peace of mind and joy. Listen to them-feel God and His presence. Each day is a new opportunity-to share God’s word.

"GOSPEL MEETINGS"
Why Should We Attend Them?
INTRODUCTION
The time for our gospel meeting is near; what is your reaction...?
Delight? Dismay?
Disinterest? Disgust?
What exactly is a gospel meeting...?
Usually a multi-day event hosted by a congregation, open to the public
Where a guest speaker (preacher, evangelist) presents a series of lessons
I have often observed the following...
Some look forward to gospel meetings, and attend every service possible
They even visit gospel meetings conducted by other churches in the area
Others appear not to care, and make little effort to attend at all
[Perhaps the difference is due to a failure to appreciate why it is good to attend gospel meetings, and especially why we should try to attend every service during our own gospel meeting. Allow me to suggest several reasons why I believe it is important. First, we should attend gospel meetings...]

TO SUPPORT A GREAT MESSAGE
GOSPEL MEETINGS PROCLAIM THE WORD OF GOD...
Which is living and powerful - He 4:12
Which is able to produce faith - Ro 10:17
-- Isn't God's Word worthy of our support?
GOSPEL MEETINGS PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST...
The power of God unto salvation - Ro 1:16
The message Jesus wants everyone to hear - Mk 16:15-16
-- Isn't the gospel of Christ worthy of our support?
[Our presence shows our support for the great message Christ has to offer the world. What does our absence show? Secondly, we should attend gospel meetings...]

TO RECEIVE A GREAT MESSAGE
GOSPEL MEETINGS HAVE A TWO-FOLD PURPOSE...
One purpose is to evangelize
To seek and save the lost by proclaiming the gospel
To provide opportunity for friends, neighbors, and strangers to hear the gospel
Another purpose is to edify
To exhort one another to love and good works - He 10:24-25
To revive those who have lost their first love - Re 2:4-5
-- Gospel meetings are designed to meet everyone's need
GOSPEL MEETINGS OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE...
For sinners
The gospel of Christ which tells of God's love for them - Jn 3:16; 1Jn 4:10
The plan of salvation which tells how to respond to God's love - Mk 16:16; Ac 2:37-38
For the saved
Apostolic doctrine to grow in grace - Ac 2:42; 2Pe 3:18
Apostles' teaching to prepare for the grace to come - 1Pe 1:13; 2Pe 1:10-11
-- Gospel meetings are designed for sinner and saved alike
[Our presence shows that we desire to receive the great message Jesus has to offer. What does our absence show? Finally, we should attend gospel meetings...]

TO SEND A GREAT MESSAGE
GOSPEL MEETINGS ALLOW YOU TO DEMONSTRATE...
Your priorities in life (the kingdom of God comes first) - Mt 6:33
Your attitude toward the gospel (you are not ashamed of it) - Ro 1:16
Your concern for the lost (you have compassion for them) - Mt 9:35-38
Your support for your brethren (you want to encourage them) - Ro 15:1-2
-- Gospel meetings reveal a lot about ourselves
GOSPEL MEETINGS ALLOW YOU TO INFLUENCE...
Your family, friends, neighbors, and brethren
For good, by the example of your presence
For ill, by the example of your absence
-- Gospel meetings impact a lot of people in various ways
CONCLUSION
In review, we should attend gospel meetings...
To support a great message
To receive a great message
To send a great message
My purpose is not to put a guilt trip on anyone, but to...
Enlighten you as to the value of gospel meetings
Encourage you to utilize the opportunity of gospel meetings
And so I leave you these words of the apostle Paul...

"Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things." - 2Ti 2:7

PLEASE COME HOME
Many people who will read this have quit going to church or else are not faithful. It is possible that they were once faithful and active members but for one reason or another they have ceased to attend or else become irregular. They no longer serve the Lord or support the church in an active way.
Perhaps you yourself are one of this number. If so, you probably tell yourself that eventually you will get started back to church—that someday you will renew your commitment to worship and serve the Lord actively...But, meanwhile, you remain away from the church and out of touch with God for the most part.
To all in this condition we send a plea from the heart: "Please come home. Come back to God, to a Savior who loves you, to brothers and sisters in Christ who miss you and care deeply for you!" You need to come back for the following reasons:
(1) YOUR CONDITION IS A MATTER 0F GRAVE CONCERN TO GOD. Jesus pictured a shepherd whose concern for a sheep away from the fold caused him to leave 99 sheep in the fold and go out and painstakingly search for the one who was missing (Luke 15:4). This is a picture of God's concern for those who are away from Him!
(2) YOU ARE DEPRIVING YOURSELF OF SPIRITUAL HEALTH. The failure to worship and serve God results in the shriveling of the soul! Your spiritual nature cannot survive if you do not feed it. Your absence from church diminishes and weakens you.
(3) YOUR TALENTS AND ABILITIES ARE BEING WASTED. Jesus taught that we have all been given the opportunity and ability to serve God in some way (Matthew 25:14-15). So much more good could be done in the world if all would use their talents as God desires. When you fail to do your part as a member of God’s work force, then the cause of Christ suffers. You are needed!
(4) YOU ARE LETTING YOUR INFLUENCE WORK AGAINST GOD, THE TRUTH, AND THE CHURCH. Although you do not intend it so, your example says to all who observe your life that the church is not important and that God may be safely ignored. It is especially tragic that those who read this message in your example are often your own children and grandchildren.
(5) OTHERS NEED YOU AND YOU NEED THEM. We need the mutual encouragement of one another in living the Christian life. By your absence from church you deprive others of the encouragement you could give them, and you deprive yourself of the strength which they could share with you.
(6) YOUR SEPARATION FROM GOD MAY BECOME A PERMANENT ONE. Life is uncertain. We have no guarantee of what the future holds. Though you intend to come back to the Lord, you may wait too long or life may end too soon. The emphasis of the Bible is always upon NOW (II Corinthians 6:2). The future is too uncertain to risk your soul on it.

The Most Important News In The World!
The Gospel Of The Grace Of God
The Cross Of Christ
"...the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."
(Acts 20:24)
The apostle Paul was commissioned by Jesus to proclaim good news of God's grace!

The word "gospel" means "good news", and "grace" means "good will, loving kindness, unmerited favor". So Paul was given the ministry to proclaim the good news:

That GOD has provided a way of salvation for sinners!
That GOD has done this on the basis of grace, without requiring merit on the part of sinners!
Are you certain that you have heard the pure and simple gospel of the grace of God? Are you sure that you heard and obeyed the gospel of Christ as proclaimed by Christ and His apostles, and not a perverted gospel (Ga 1:8-9) as popularly proclaimed by many today?

"The Gospel Of Grace Of God" as taught in the New Testament can be summarized under three headings, beginning with...

1. THE "NEED" FOR GRACE
The Bible describes our spiritual condition. Everyone is a sinner (Ro 3:23), even if you have broken just one commandment (Jm 2:10)! The consequences of sin are serious, both in this life (Isa 59:2) and in the one to come (Ro 6:23; Re 21:8).

Even morally good people need to be saved! Consider the example of Cornelius: "a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always." (Ac 10:2) And yet he was told to send for Peter, "who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved." (Ac 11:14)

Being a good, religious person cannot save you! In fact, most examples of conversion (salvation) described in the book of Acts were people who were already very religious, yet were told what they needed to do to be saved (cf. Ac 2:36-41; 8:26-38; 16:13-16).

The fact is, as sinners we cannot accomplish the removal of our guilt on our own. We cannot run away from this guilt, we cannot work our way out of this guilt. So don't be self-deceived by notions of your own goodness. We are all sinners in need of salvation!

But the gospel of Jesus Christ is good news about unmerited favor, because it tells about...

2. THE "PROVISION" FOR GRACE
Out of "love", God has provided His Son! He sent Jesus to die that we might have eternal life (Jn 3:16; 1Jn 4:9). Because God loved us, He made His Son a "propitiation" for our sins (1Jn 4:10). A "propitiation" is an offering designed to atone for sin. Therefore God offered His Son as a sacrifice for our sins, which leads to a related point...

Out of "justice", God has provided His Son! God is holy, and to satisfy His justice (the price for sin must be paid) God provided redemption through the blood of His Son (Ro 3:24-26; Ep 1:7). God's grace therefore functions in this way...

God's justice requires an appropriate sacrifice for sin. This no man can offer.
God's love provided His Son as the perfect sacrifice for sin. It is available to all!
So to satisfy both His justice and His love, God has graciously provided salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. What we cannot earn on our own, God has provided for us! As John the Baptist said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (Jn 1:29)

But the provision of grace is not unconditional (otherwise all would be saved). Therefore, we need to understand...

3. THE "RECEPTION" OF GRACE
Receiving God's grace requires obedience. Jesus is "the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him" (He 5:9). Freedom from sin comes when one is willing to obey Him from the heart (Ro 6:17-18).

Such obedience involves:

Believing (i.e., trusting) in Jesus as the Son of God who died for your sins (Jn 3:16).
Repenting of your sins because of godly sorrow, resolving to no longer live for sin, but to live for God (Ac 17:30; 2Co 7:9-11).
Confessing your faith in Jesus before others (Ro 10:9-10; Mt 10:32-33).
Being buried with Christ in baptism for the remission of your sins (Mk 16:15-16; Ac 2:38; 8:35-38; 22:16).
Remaining faithful to Jesus even unto death (He 3:12-14; Re 2:10).
Please note carefully: Such obedience does not earn or merit one's salvation. Especially is this true in regards to baptism:

Baptism is a washing of regeneration that involves God's mercy and grace (Tit 3:4-7).
Baptism unites one with Christ in His burial and resurrection to new life (Ro 6:3-8).
Baptism is how we put on Christ through faith (Ga 3:26-27).
Baptism is God working on you because of your faith in Christ (Col 2:11-13).
Baptism saves us as an appeal for salvation (1Pe 3:21).

"CHALLENGES CONFRONTING THE CHURCH"
Denominationalism
INTRODUCTION
1. A great challenge confronting the church is denominationalism...
a. According to one account, there are more than 38,000 different denominations!
b. Different religious organizations, bearing many different religious names
c. Hindering the spread of the gospel ("Why, you Christians can't even agree!")
2. Denominationalism confronted the church early on...
a. Many think that it started with the Protestant reformation (ca. 1517 AD)
b. Properly understood, its origins can be traced to the second century AD
[What is denominationalism? Why is it wrong? Such questions this study will address...]
I. DEFINING DENOMINATION AND DENOMINATIONALISM
A. WHAT IS A DENOMINATION...?
1. "A large group of religious congregations united under a common faith and name and organized under a single administrative and legal hierarchy." - The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language
2. By their common name and tie to a governing body above the local congregation, they are "denominated" from all congregations that do not submit to the same authority
3. Some examples:
a. The Roman Catholic Church is a denomination made up of those churches that submit to the pope in Rome
b. The Eastern Orthodox Church is a denomination made up of those churches that submit to the patriarch of Constantinople
c. The Anglican Church of England is a denomination made up of those churches that submit to the archbishop of Canterbury
d. The Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) is made up of those churches that submit to the synod in Missouri
-- A denomination is a group of congregations that are joined together under some governing body, all wearing the same distinctive name
B. WHAT IS DENOMINATIONALISM...?
1. According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:
a. "The tendency to separate into religious denominations"
b. "Advocacy of separation into religious denominations"
c. "Strict adherence to a denomination; sectarianism"
2. For the purpose in this series, I will be applying the term to any approval of the denominational division which exists today
a. Many in denominations today are not all that devoted to their denominational principles or interests
b. But by membership in a denomination they implicitly advocate separation into religious denominations
[Is denominationalism really a challenge confronting the church? Some consider it a blessing: e.g., "Join the church of your choice!" But from a Biblical perspective, consider...]
II. WHY DENOMINATIONALISM IS WRONG
A. IT IS UN-SCRIPTURAL...
1. That is, it is without Scriptural support
a. There is no basis in the Bible for local churches being divided up into various denominational bodies
b. There is no denomination that can go to the Bible and say, "See that passage? There is our church (denomination)!"
2. In the New Testament...
a. Local congregations were independent, autonomous (self-governing)
b. Church organization was limited to within the local congregation
c. With elders (also known as pastors, bishops, overseers, presbyters) appointed to oversee only the congregation of which they were members - cf. Ac 20:17,28; 1Pe 5:1-2
3. The only authority above the local church in the NT was Christ and His apostles
a. Once the church began, apostles were not replaced after they died - e.g., Ac 12:1-2
b. But through the Word of God, the authority of Christ and His apostles continues
-- Individuals, synods, conferences, etc., that presume to usurp authority over local churches today do so without Scriptural authority
B. IT IS ANTI-SCRIPTURAL...
1. Not only is it without scriptural support, it is contrary to what the Bible teaches
2. It is contrary to the prayer of Jesus for unity among His believers - Jn 17:20-23
3. It is condemned by Paul in his epistle to the church at Corinth
a. There are to be no divisions among believers - 1Co 1:10-13
b. Sectarianism is a sign of carnality - 1Co 3:3-4
4. It opposes the efforts of Christ on the cross! - Ep 2:14-16
a. Jesus died to break down the wall of division
b. Jesus died to reconcile man to God in ONE body
-- Just as our sin works against the efforts of Christ on the cross (for He died to put away sin), so does denominational division!
C. IT IS HARMFUL TO THE CAUSE OF CHRIST...
1. Jesus knew that unity among His disciples would be "the final apologetic"
a. Cf. "that the world may believe" - Jn 17:21
b. In view of Jesus' words, we should not be surprised when unbelievers are slow to accept the gospel coming from a divided church
2. Many point to the divided condition of those professing to follow Christ...
a. Atheists and agnostics use religious division as an excuse not to believe in God
b. Muslims, Jews, etc. often use denominationalism reasons not to believe in Christ
3. Denominationalism has also given support and encouragement to the cults
a. Mormonism started in reaction to the denominationalism of Joseph Smith's day
b. Those who call themselves "Jehovah's Witnesses" use religious division to encourage people to follow their own strictly-controlled organization
-- How can any true disciple of Christ support such a harmful concept?
D. OTHERS WHO VIEWED DENOMINATIONALISM AS WRONG...
1. Martin Luther, a leader of the Reformation Movement:
"I ask that men make no reference to my name, and call themselves not Lutherans, but Christians. What is Luther? My doctrine, I am sure, is not mine, nor have I been crucified for any one. St. Paul, in 1 Cor. 3, would not allow Christians to call themselves Pauline or Petrine, but Christian. How then should I, poor, foul carcass that I am, come to have men give to the children of Christ a name derived from my worthless name? No, no, my dear friends; let us abolish all party names, and call ourselves Christians after Him Whose doctrine we have." - Hugh Thomason Kerr, A Compend of Luther's Theology (Philadelphia: The Westminster Press, 1943, p. 135)
2. John Wesley, another reformation leader, among whose followers are Methodists, Wesleyans, etc.:
"Would to God that all party names, and unscriptural phrases and forms which have divided the Christian world, were forgot and that the very name [Methodist] might never be mentioned more, but be buried in eternal oblivion." - John Wesley, Universal Knowledge, A Dictionary and Encyclopedia of Arts, Science, History, Biography, Law, Literature, Religions, Nations, Races, Customs, and Institutions, Vol. 9, Edward A. Pace, Editor (New York: Universal Knowledge Foundation, 1927, p. 540)
3. Charles Spurgeon, one of the greatest Baptist preachers who ever lived:
"I look forward with pleasure to the day when there will not be a Baptist living! I hope that the Baptist name will soon perish, but let Christ's name last forever." - Spurgeon Memorial Library, Vol. I., p. 168
-- Note well: these individuals were bemoaning the use of denominational titles, not organizational ties per se
CONCLUSION
1. But it is organizational ties above the local church that leads to denominationalism...
a. Once local churches are "organized under a single administrative and legal hierarchy", denominational names soon follow!
b. And so it is that denominationalism with its religious division continues to grow!
2. If local churches are to successfully confront the challenge of denominationalism, they must...
a. Remain independent, autonomous (self-governing) congregations
b. Refuse organizational associations with other churches
c. Refrain from using denominational names for their churches
3. Churches that succeed in avoiding denominationalism are more likely to be...
a. Nothing more than local churches of Christ
b. Christians who simply seek to follow Jesus as His disciples
c. The answer to the prayer of our Lord for unity among believers - cf. Jn 17:20-21
