"...if someone hurts us, we should let them know. That should be the first thing we do. That should be our practice as disciples of Jesus. And our culture as a community that wants to love one another.
And if it isn’t, if we don’t want to bother doing that, if we would rather gossip and talk bad about someone behind their back and then talk nice to their face, then we participate in what Jesus calls sin. Catholic theologian James Keenan defines sin is the failure to BOTHER to love. We don’t bother to care about the truth. We don’t bother to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. We don’t bother to think about how our words and actions might affect them. In the story of the Good Samaritan, the priest and the Levite don’t bother to help the man beside the road. But the good Samaritan does. He BOTHERS to love his neighbor as himself."

As we approach Labor Day weekend, we are reminded of the Social Creed for the 21st Century, which calls us to "offer a vision of a society that shares more and consumes less, seeks compassion over suspicion and equality over domination, and finds security in joined hands rather than in massed arms.”

“A Social Creed for the 21st Century” lifts up Jesus’ words in John 10:10, that he came so that we might have abundant life. Rev Dr Peter Kabaiku brought us a Word from the Lord today!

“Shiphrah and Puah, the midwives, are told directly by Pharaoh to kill Hebrew boys at birth. They refuse — quietly, without a manifesto, simply by fearing God more than they feared the king. A mother refuses to let despair have the final say over her son; she hides him, and when hiding is no longer possible, she does something even braver — she builds him a small vessel and sets him on the river, refusing to let the Nile become only a place of death when it might yet become a place of deliverance. Miriam, a child herself, refuses to be silent, and steps forward to speak to power on her brother’s behalf. And then, most surprising of all, Pharaoh’s own daughter — standing inside the very household issuing the decree of death — refuses to comply with her father’s order, and instead extends mercy, drawing a Hebrew child out of the water and into her own family.

None of them could see the whole story. The midwives did not know they were preserving the deliverer of Israel. Miriam did not know she was watching the future stand in the current. Pharaoh’s daughter certainly did not know she was raising the man who would one day confront her own household on behalf of the enslaved. Each of them simply refused one evil, in front of them, with the courage available to them in that moment.

And perhaps that is important for us to hear: we do not have to see the whole story before we take the next faithful step.
That is how God unlocks doors — not usually through a single hero, but through an unglamorous chain of people who say no to what they were told to accept.”
