Great reflection!

Great reflection!

There have always been a whole lot of viable churches with just a handful of people in them.

On Easter Sunday, 26 people gathered for our congregation's first in-person worship service since the pandemic began, and since we had to move out of our church building. One older member who had felt particularly isolated by the pandemic, burst into tears the moment she encountered the gathered group. New faces joined us. We remembered the death of one dear member to Covid. And we honored the 90th birthday of our eldest member. It is an understatement to say we felt the power of the resurrection flowing through our body.

Dear Friends and Members of Friends Community Church, present and past. Friends of FCC Midway City are in unity that we need to persist in prayer for justice and mercy in the tragic violence in Ukraine. We pray for justice and mercy for both Ukrainians and Russians, an end to the violence and destruction, and for God's abounding grace to work in working his grace for healing and peace. The work of Mennonite Central Committee in Ukraine gives special and urgent attention to the millions of displaced persons in Ukraine, and they have been working in Ukraine for several years already, and have a tried and true record of working for justice, peace, and humanitarian relief in alignment with our values as Friends of Jesus. Rather than taking a collection, I am calling on all Friends to prayerfully consider supporting the work of MCC, which you can view through the following link. https://mcc.org/stories/crisis-ukraine

From True Friends in Ukraine.

"This Morning." From a Friend in Russia:

This morning, President Putin declared war on Ukraine.

Cities are under rocket fire, paratroopers are landing, people are being killed.

This morning, I pray God to protect as many people as possible in Ukraine, that He take them under His shield. I hope, in a time of force gone mad, that the power of the Holy Spirit, that which dwells in each of us, may give each of us the strength and forbearance to stand against the madness. I believe that, in each person, there is that of God, and that each person is deserving of life. The people of Ukraine are deserving of life, of peace and of freedom.

Let us cast war out from our own hearts.

This morning, our nation has broken into two parts.

A demon-ridden elite has supported Vladimir Putin’s terrifying ideas: his propagandists, his security men and the courts will safeguard the existing order of things. Each of them, who has refused to take action on behalf of peace, bears a personal responsibility for the deaths which are taking place. There are others, banned from decision-making, deprived both of voice and of the power to choose, forced out of our country, stung silent by the propaganda, who are becoming only spectators to the on-going madness, And each of us, the majority of the citizens of Russia, is are called to come to an understanding of the pain of war, of the malignancy of the developing situation. And God will give each of us the strength to make a stand and to speak out, as long as we listen to the song of peace.

This morning, I asked my son not to to believe his teachers, if, even in passing, they should speak in favor of the rightness of Russia’s and Putin’s acts of war, and to tell me about them this evening. I will not allow the government to indoctrinate my child with the propaganda of death.

Discuss the situation with friends and family. make it clear to the children, that the what is happening is harmful to the soul, make it clear to yourself.

Act according to your conscience, do not allow the circumstances to destroy you. Hold to those you hold dear, help those near to you, make a public witness for peace, don’t give an ear to the blandishments of the propagandists.

No to war.

Today Cara brings a word from Ezekiel 2-8 about the prophetic call of God's people to speak and act in truth. "Niceness" and comfort can never be our guide or goal, only a relentless adherence to the spirit of God must ground us. Ezekiel was sent into a world full of "briars" and "scorpions" and told to be bold and unafraid. The same task was given to Jesus and we share in that task as well. May we live rightly as God's people, and may we speak first to ourselves always.

Cara's words can be found here:

We cannot, nor should we ever try, to run from our past and present pains; neither can we, nor is it healthy, to get stuck in our sorrows either. Rather, in Lamentations we learn a different way, the way of remembering and feeling our pains for what they are, while also inviting the steadfast love of the Lord into our places of sorrow which moves us towards hope and healing. Choose a new path today and remember that the Lord is always for you and with you.

Yesterday evening Cara posted a video reflecting on 1 Samuel 16 and the words, "Why are you still mourning for Saul?" In those words she heard a call to contemporary followers of Jesus to stop mourning the bygone days of Christendom power and influence and to step into the new and exciting thing God is doing with his people at the margins. Her words can be found here:

Today Cara shares about the need to rid ourselves of the idolatry of power that so often takes root in our hearts and in our churches. We have been called to ways of peace and collaboration, not to the building up of empires. Her thoughts can be found here:

Last week Julianna Smith, who sojourned with our community before moving to Portland earlier this year, delivered a timely word on the book of Amos. Her sermon can be found at the link below, and it is very much worth a listen. What "normal" things in the church, in society, and in ourselves are not working and need to be changed?
