Episcopal Church of the Redeemer

Episcopal Church of the Redeemer On March 13, 1960, the Reverend Joseph W. Six months later the congregation moved into a building at the corner of Chippenham Parkway and Huguenot Road. The Rev.

Pinder and about 40 dedicated people met at the Southampton Recreation Association near Richmond, Virginia to celebrate the first service of a new Episcopal church in Chesterfield County. The first service was held on September 11, 1960. The original “temporary” A-frame building became the permanent home of the church for the next 27 years. In 1988, the widening of Chippenham Parkway resulted in t

he state acquiring the site of the church. Redeemer relocated to the intersection of Salisbury Road and Winterfield Road in the Salisbury subdivision. The brick and frame colonial architecture of the present building is not only in keeping with the look of the area, but it denotes the permanence of an established congregation. Stephen P. Cowardin became Redeemer’s fourth rector in 1994. Following the move to the Salisbury neighborhood, Redeemer experienced a dramatic growth in membership, its ministries, Christian education, outreach, and fellowship programs. In addition, Redeemer Episcopal Day School was established. In October 1998, a major expansion of the facility was completed, resulting in increased space for education, meetings, fellowship, and offices. While our physical appearance and size have changed, the concept that ours is a congregation built with a sense of family, faith, love, and friendship is just as true today as it was 50 years ago.

As we come to the end of Advent, we were reminded by our high school formation class on Sunday about the meaning of the 4th candle in the Advent wreath.

The fourth candle of Advent is the Candle of Love. God's love is a perfect love, and Jesus shows us how to love others. Love is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at this candle, we celebrate the love we find in Jesus Christ. During Advent, we remember again God’s gift of Jesus to the world and know that God’s Love for all people is the reason for this gift. Love comes at Christmas in Jesus Christ. When we look at the fourth candle, we remember God’s love.

A reading from John. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” During Advent we remember God loves us.

Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, as we light the fourth Advent candle of love, may your love inspire us to love one another as you have loved us. Let your love guide our actions and words as we prepare for Christ's birth. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

This is the third week of Advent and Sunday, we lit the Candle of Joy. Otherwise known as the Shepherds' Candle, this candle reflects the joy that comes through Jesus’ arrival, and through the salvation he has gifted us. Why does this matter? This matters because, while we wait for Christ to come again, we don’t have to despair. God has given us a joy that no one can take away. No matter what happens in this dark world, we can experience light. We have light even in the darkest moments.

Join us this Sunday, December 14th at 5:00 pm for the Advent service of Lesson & Carols.

This is a traditional Christian worship service that narrates the story of salvation history and the birth of Jesus through a series of Scripture readings interspersed with carols, hymns, and choral music.

A reception will be held after the service.

As we light the second candle of Advent—the candle of Peace—we pause to reflect on the true meaning of the season. In the midst of any holiday chaos, we pray for the overwhelming peace that only God can provide. How are you finding moments of peace this week? Share below! 👇🎄

On the second Sunday of Advent, we hear the call from two of God’s prophets, Isaiah and John the Baptist, reminding us that our redeemer’s way must be prepared. We pray for grace to repent and turn toward God, so that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ. In him, the shoot from the root of Jesse, all creation finds hope, peace, and new life.
