Excerpt from the article:

To treat these bleeds promptly, say the co-authors, it's essential to measure the blood loss rather than merely eyeballing it — which can miss the hemorrhages about half the time. Devall says a simple plastic drape placed beneath the woman can work wonders.

"The blood then collects into this specially designed drape, which has calibrated lines on it," says Devall. "These lines allow midwives and doctors to easily see the amount of blood loss after the birth."

There are multiple interventions: uterine massage to encourage contractions, medication, IV fluids.

The researchers conducted a massive trial across Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa involving more than 200,000 women. They tested this approach — of early detection with a drape, clear criteria for treatment and the subsequent set of simultaneous interventions … and the results were unmistakable.

"We saw a massive decrease in severe bleeding," says Devall."

A newly published series of reports calls attention to a dire situation facing millions of women after childbirth — and the solutions that can prevent death from postpartum hemorrhage.

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

***Did you know?***

While many mainstream denominations are just beginning to discuss LGBTQ+ inclusion, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has led the religious left for decades:

1969/1970: UU minister Rev. James L. Stoll became the first ordained minister of any major religious group to publicly come out as gay. In 1970, the UUA officially passed a resolution condemning discrimination against gay and bisexual individuals.

1973: The UUA became the first denomination to establish an official office dedicated to LGBTQ+ issues (originally the Office of Gay Concerns).

1984/1988: The General Assembly formally affirmed the practice of performing same-sex unions decades before civil legalization. In 1988, they ordained their first openly transgender minister.

1989: The UUA launched the Welcoming Congregation Program. This formal, rigorous process helps churches actively dismantle homophobia and transphobia. Today, over 80% of U.S. and 99% of Canadian UU churches hold this official designation, including the Unitarian Universalist Church of Midland!

Come be yoU with Us!

Who Is Kwan Yin?
By: Andrea Miller

"One of Buddhism’s most beloved bodhisattvas, and the embodiment of compassion, Kwan Yin is known as “she who hears the cries of the world.”

The embodiment of compassion, Kwan Yin is known as “she who hears the cries of the world.” One of Buddhism’s most beloved bodhisattvas, she also holds a special place in the hearts of people of other faiths, including Daoists and Confucianists.

Kwan Yin is the protector of women, children, sailors, fishermen, anyone in trouble, and the sick, disabled, and poor. Some Buddhist schools present her as male and female interchangeably. The idea is that a bodhisattva—a being of great realization who vows to forego enlightenment until all sentient beings are liberated—can manifest in whatever form will most effectively free beings from suffering.

Kwan Yin originated in India as Avalokiteshvara, the male bodhisattva of compassion. He was introduced to China in the early centuries of the Common Era, but apparently there was a hunger for a feminine face of compassion, and by the eighth century female forms of Avalokiteshvara emerged. By the ninth century, Kwan Yin had become the main representation of compassion in China, and from there her veneration spread across Asia...."
