WEEK 4
Next we head to Numbers 13–14, Moses sent 12 spies to scope out the Promised Land of Canaan. They discovered the land was perfect with one exception: the people who already lived there were strong and powerful. Most of the spies were intimidated and wanted to give up. Only two, Joshua and Caleb, spoke up and said that God would provide a way for them to conquer the land. God rewarded Joshua and Caleb’s faith and courage. They were only men of their generation to see the land God promised to Abraham.

Bottom Line: You can do what you should even when others are afraid. We will face times when the people around us are scared or making unwise choices. When that happens, we should trust God. He can give us the courage we need to do what we should and be an example that points others to Him.

WEEK 3
In Exodus 13:17–14:31, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, but found himself up against an impossible scenario: the Red Sea in front of them and Pharaoh’s army chasing them down from behind. Only God could save them. Moses stood strong in the face of fear and trusted God to do what only God could do—part the Red Sea and create dry ground for the Israelites to escape. Our God is truly the God of the impossible.

Bottom Line: You can do what you should even when things seem impossible. We may not face the Red Sea or an army of angry Egyptians, but we will face moments where what we need to do will feel impossible to us. When that happens, we can remember that we can trust God no matter what. God is bigger and stronger than anything we face. Just like Moses and the Israelites, God can do the impossible in our lives too.

WEEK 2
We continue our look at courage in Exodus 3–6:12 and 7–12:42. God calls Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. Moses gives excuse after excuse for why he’s not the person God should use. But Moses doesn’t have a choice; God has chosen him. Even though Moses is frightened, he trusts God and confronts Pharaoh to let God’s people go. In the end, God’s power triumphs and Pharaoh releases his hold on the Israelites.

Bottom Line: You can do what you should even when you don’t feel ready. We all face times when we feel like we’re supposed to do something, but fear that we won’t have what it takes to get it done. We can have courage to follow through knowing that God can give us what we need to get the job done.

WEEK 1
In Exodus 2:1-10, we discover that Moses was born during a time when Pharaoh feared that God’s people would overthrow his reign. He enslaved them and commanded that all of the Hebrew baby boys be killed. Moses’ mother and sister wouldn’t obey Pharaoh’s decree. They had courage to keep Moses alive. God rescued him with help from Pharaoh’s own daughter who ended up bringing him to live in the palace and raising him as an Egyptian.

Bottom Line: You can do what you should even when you don’t know what will happen next. Most of the time our fear comes from assuming something about the future that may or may not happen. Courage doesn’t mean our fear is gone. Rather, courage is choosing to act even though we are afraid. We’ll never know what will happen next, but we can trust God to give us the strength we need to move forward.

WEEK 4
We finish our look at Joseph’s life in Genesis 42-45, where we discover that the famine spreads all the way to where Joseph’s family lived. Jacob sends Joseph’s brothers down to Egypt to get food where they end up in front of Joseph. After some back and forth, Joseph finally reveals his identity and forgives his brothers for how they treated him. Throughout his entire life, Joseph trusted God and realized that what his brothers intended for harm, God intended for good to help preserve their family.

Bottom Line: You can trust God no matter what. This is one of the basic truths of 252 Basics. Above all else, we want kids to realize that they can take God at His word. We see throughout the Bible that God is working on our behalf to rescue us. He sent Jesus to make a way for us to be with God forever. We pray kids put their faith in Him.

WEEK 3
In Genesis 41, we look at the next chapter of Joseph’s life. Pharaoh had a dream that no one could interpret. The cupbearer finally remembered how Joseph interpreted his dream while they were in prison and recommended they get him to help. With God’s help, Joseph interpreted the dreams and formulates a plan to help Egypt survive through the seven years of famine that God said was coming. Pharaoh ended up putting Joseph in charge of the entire project. Joseph could have been worried and decided that the task was too difficult, but instead he trusted God and God was faithful.

Bottom Line: When the pressure is on, you can trust God is with you. Kids will face moments when they’re called to do something that might seem crazy to us—maybe something as simple as getting up in front of the class and giving a speech—but we can trust God to give us the strength and courage to face whatever comes our way.

WEEK 2
We continue Joseph’s story in Genesis 40. Joseph is accused of something he didn’t do and finds himself in prison. Joseph still trusted God, and God was with him. While he’s in prison, Joseph meets pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker, who both end up having dreams they don’t understand. With God’s help, Joseph interprets their dreams. The Cupbearer promises to talk to pharaoh about Joseph and his situation, but forgets about Joseph. Still, Joseph trusted God and eventually is put in charge of the rest of the prisoners.

Bottom Line: When life doesn’t make sense, you can trust God is with you. There will be times in a kid’s life when something happens that just doesn’t make sense like a divorce, moving to a new home or a new school, or getting a serious illness. And while that situation is confusing, we pray kids continue to trust God and allow Him to help them get through that difficult time.

WEEK 1
In Genesis 37 and 39:1-2, we discover that Joseph was his father Jacob’s favorite. He gave Joseph a colorful coat, which made the rest of his brothers extremely jealous. On top of that, Joseph told his family about his dreams where they bowed down to him. Eventually, they sell Joseph into slavery and lie about it to their father. Though Joseph was alone in a far-away country, he chose to trust God.

Bottom Line: When you think you’re alone, you can trust God is with you. Kids may have time when they feel like no one is with them or on their side. Although they feel that way, Someone is looking out for them. We pray that kids come to realize that God is always with them.

WEEK 4
In the final week of August, we’ll discover that God’s promises to Abraham are starting to come true. Abraham’s wife, Sarah, gives birth to a son. They name him Isaac. But then in Genesis 18, 21, 22, we discover that God asks Abraham to sacrifice his only son. Abraham trusted what he knew about God and obeyed believing that God would make a way of escape for Isaac. Eventually, Abraham’s family becomes a great nation and another Son would arrive on the planet. Jesus would become the ultimate way of escape for the whole world.

Bottom Line: I should trust and obey because there’s a bigger plan. Like Abraham, God might be asking us to do something that we don’t quite understand. But as we read through the Bible, we read about how God has been faithful throughout history. We can trust what we know about God to trust and obey right now.

WEEK 3
For week three, we continue our journey through God’s One Big Story with Abram. As we track along with His story throughout passages in Genesis 12, 13, and 15, we’ll see how Abram dropped everything to follow God. God gave Abram a clear promise to establish a great nation from Abram’s family, but God didn’t offer a clear picture of the journey it would take for that to happen. Abram obeyed God in spite of the unknowns.

Bottom Line: I should trust and obey even if I don’t know how it will all work out. Often the big moments of obedience, like the one that happened to Abram, happen to parents or leaders and are out of kids’ control. However, we pray that kids will learn they can trust and obey with how they respond and the attitude they demonstrate throughout the situation.
