A Unique Inheritance

As we continue to live out our Mission Statement and Core Values, there is always that tricky question of who is to do what. Back in the Book of Joshua when the twelve tribes were divvying up the Promised Land, eleven of the tribes were given choice property. The Levites, however, received no share of the land. God had said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.” Instead, He said, “I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift.” (Numbers 18:20 and 18:7)

Hmm, I don’t know about you, but that land package deal looks a little more appealing to me than church duty! But there is a mystery here that astute Levites understood, which some of you already know: there is joy in ministering unto the Lord. Now I don’t just mean serving in a church-related role. It’s more of being used and being useful to God—for his glory.

Just what does ministering unto the Lord look like? For the Levites it was a matter of representing the people before the Lord. For us, I believe it means being available for any of His purposes: changing a diaper in the nursery, repairing a roof, counselling a classmate, leading an exercise or Tai Chi class, assembling boxes for the food pantry, acting out a Bible story at VBS, or spending quiet time in Bible study and meditation.

Because there is such a variety of personalities and circumstances in our church body, there is no limit to the variety of ways we can serve the Lord. When we become God’s channels to communicate His love for humanity, something unique and wonderful happens to us—we begin to look like Jesus! What an inheritance!

The early church wasn’t built on convenience but on devotion, shared life, and worship. :42-47

You weren't meant to follow Jesus alone. That's why we meet.

Belonging to a body of believers is about worshiping God, not satisfying personal preferences.

Belonging to a church means giving God your whole life, not just your Sunday.
