Thought: God's ways are not our ways
Quote: "Jesus is the true Servant King, as He befriends the most wretched of sinners, including you and me!" --Daniel Akin
Church Family,
What is your reaction to the word "unexpected"? Some of you view this positively. An unexpected gift, a surprise party; the out of the norm is a welcomed break from the monotony of life. Others, "unexpected" sends shivers down your spine. You have received unexpected and unwelcomed news that has forever changed your life. For you there is beauty, comfort, and security in the monotony. Neither response to "unexpected" is bad; they are just different.
To those who have a negative connotation to unexpected, you might have found it hard to be a disciple of Jesus in the 1st century. Jesus was the King of the unexpected. There is no better proof to this fact than the passage we will study this week. Jesus will call the most unexpected person into His discipleship circle. Matthew/Levi, who was a dreaded tax-collector is invited onto the Jesus Team.
Jesus will then teach about the spiritual disciplines of fasting and Sabbath in unexpected ways. Jesus will affirm there is a time for fasting, but then, unexpectedly He would say in essence, "Now is not that time". Jesus, unexpectedly taught about keeping Sabbath in a way that honors God, as opposed to keeping the Sabbath in a way that honors one's self-righteousness.
Here is the crux of Jesus's unexpectedness; to those who are humble and dependent upon Him, His unexpected ways are glorious. To the prideful, arrogant, and self-reliant Jesus's unexpectedness is frustrating. Which are you? Until Sunday...
Captivated Servant,
