We want to take this opportunity to discuss what has been happening in regards to police brutality and racial inequality amongst the black community around the world and the steps we as the Muslim Student Association can take to improve our organization when it comes to including Black students and their experience within our greater MSA community. We also want to make it our duty to understand and highlight how Black people have contributed to Islam and how Black individuals make up a great part of the Islam community.
As many of you know, at Wesleyan the majority of our community is Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern, but holistically this composition of our community is a misconception that does not translate into our society. Islam is not only tied to these two nationalities, in fact, Islam encompasses a broad range of nationalities and races including the Black race. Unfortunately, within both of these communities racism exists and this is something that must be acknowledged and changed with action. It must be noted that racism doesn't exist theoretically in Islam but in practice it does. Us humans have been touched by colonization which negates religion and that effects how we interpret Islam at times. We are ashamed that we have not done enough to address this within our community and in the future we will be more conscious and express how vital Black Muslim students and in general Black people are to our community. There is so much that needs to be fixed and we believe it starts with educating ourselves about Black history and the continued discrimination faced by Black people.
Going forward, we must educate ourselves surrounding issues concerning police brutality, the contribution of Black individuals to the spread of Islam, the Model Minority Myth, Arab superiority, the connection between Black Liberation Movements and Palestinian Liberation Movements, and a handful of other issues concerning these areas. We encourage you all to have conversations with family and friends, addressing the injustices and systematic oppression faced by Black people every day. Additionally, we must do more. As students of an elite institute, we believe it is our responsibility as educated scholars and future world leaders to stand in line and lead the conversations either through discussions, petitions, or donations.
