Heralds of Revival Ministries

Heralds of Revival Ministries When simply put, our God-given vision, passion, and mission in Heralds of Revival is “the true revival of Christianity.”

We strongly believe that Christianity is not a religion, but an intimate relationship with God through Christ Jesus. It is not devotion to a religious organization, institution or denomination, but to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Kingdom. Christianity is not strict adherence to some religious laws, rites or regulations, but to the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not conforming to some r

eligious standards, but conforming wholly to Christ’s example, in living and in dying also. In a nutshell, Christianity is simply denying yourself, taking up your cross daily, and following and cleaving steadfastly to the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 9:23). Regrettably, the Christianity we profess, practice and protect today is at variance with the first century Christianity, the true Christianity. It is a complete departure from “the faith of old” which was once for all delivered to the saints and which we are exhorted to earnestly profess, practice and protect (Jude 3). When simply put, our God-given vision, passion, and mission in Heralds of Revival is “the true revival of Christianity.”

We are a people of Christ who are passionately and relentlessly committed to the full restoration of “the faith of old” delivered once for all to the saints (that is, the body of teachings of Christ delivered unto the early apostles of Christ and which was passed down in the Church). We have been labouring and contending earnestly for the true revival of Christianity (the faith of old) since 1998 through our Christ-centred lifestyle, teachings, publications, missions, and intercessions. Why not join us today?

“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Jude 1:3-4 NKJV).

IS THIS NAOMI?

"Now the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. And it happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them; and the women said, "Is this Naomi?" (Ruth 1:19 NKJV)

In the days when the judges ruled in Israel, there was a famine in the land, and therefore, Elimelech and his family fled Bethlehem to dwell in the country of Moab. Sadly, Elimelech and his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, died in ten years. So, Naomi (Elimelech's wife) became utterly devastated.

But when Naomi heard that God had visited His people by giving them bread, she decided to return home. However, not anymore as Naomi, but as Mara (Ruth 1:1-7).

Naomi returned to Bethlehem with one of her daughters-in-law (Ruth), who clung tenaciously to her and would not leave her as Orpha did.

Although Naomi passionately entreated and persuaded Ruth to return to her people, Ruth would not abandon her to misery and grief even when there seemed to be no gain or benefit in following and cleaving to Naomi. What selfless love!

The Scripture points out Ruth's selfless love.

Ruth 1:14-17 – NKJV
14 Then they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
15 And she said, "Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law."
16 But Ruth said: "Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God.
17 Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The LORD do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me."

What a resolution!

It takes this kind of resolution to follow and cleave to the Lord Jesus in this world of uncertainties.

When Naomi and her devoted daughter-in-law, Ruth, eventually returned to Bethlehem, the Scripture states that "the whole city was excited because of them; and the women said, "Is this Naomi?" (Ruth 1:19 NKJV).

Unfortunately, Naomi had allowed her bitter experience, misfortune, or tribulation while sojourning in Moab to change her name, disposition, self-image, or identity.

Ruth 1:20-21 – NKJV
20 But she said to them, "Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
21 "I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?"

The name "Naomi" (My delight) is derived from a root signifying sweetness or pleasantness (Smith's Bible Dictionary).

Considering her bitter experience and present pitiable plight, Naomi thought her old name had become inappropriate, so she refused to answer to Naomi. Instead, she wanted to be identified with her bitter experience, so she adopted a new name, Mara (Sad, bitter).

Naomi had allowed her bitter experience in life to erode her sweetness and pleasantness. She had become overwhelmed, submerged, or immersed in her misery and grief.

Naomi allowed the loss, misfortune, or tragedy she experienced while sojourning in Moab to redefine her life, cloud her purpose, and erode her joy and confidence in God.

Some believers today, like Naomi, who are called to be the salt of the earth, have allowed their bitter experiences in life to erode their saltness or flavor (Matt. 5:13).

They have allowed their trials, tragedies, or tribulations to redefine their lives, submerge their joy in the Lord, becloud their purpose, image, or identity in Christ, and erode their conviction and confidence in their God.

Unlike Naomi, as a believer in Christ, you must never allow your bitter experience or tragedy to redefine your life, submerge your joy in the Lord, and becloud your divine purpose or vision, or shake, diminish, or erode your confidence in God.

You must hold fast to God's promises regardless of your circumstances. You are who God says you are and not what your past, present, or future circumstances say you are.

Don't bear or answer to any name or identity contrary to what God calls you in His Word!

The Scripture admonishes you not to "look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Cor. 4:18 NKJV).

Sadly, Naomi maligned God in her ignorance and bitterness, saying that the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. "I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty." (Ruth 1:20 NKJV).

Sadly, some believers today, like Naomi, are ignorantly maligning God by holding Him responsible for every evil, misfortune, or tragedy that befalls them.

James warns us against this tendency.

James 1:13-15 – NKJV
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.
15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

God never told Elimelech (Naomi's husband), whose name means "My God is King," to leave Bethlehem (the house of bread) in the days of famine. But contrary to his name, Elimelech chose not to abide in God's presence or stay under God's authority.

Instead, Elimelech chose to go down to the country of Moab to be unequally yoked together with the Gentiles, thereby making himself vulnerable to the devil, who devoured him and emptied him of all that God had blessed him with.

What a lesson for us today!

Beloved, quit maligning or blaming God for your failure, sickness, misfortune, or tragedy. God will never test or punish born-again believers with evil. God is not the source of evil but of good. (Jam. 1:16-17).

However, suppose you have made yourself vulnerable or susceptible to the devil's attack by not dwelling in the secret place of the Most High (that is, under the Lordship of Jesus Christ), like Naomi. In that case, you need to arise today, repent, and return to abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

When Naomi returned to God in Bethlehem, God restored all the devil had devoured and stolen from her. God restored her joy, confidence, sweetness, and pleasantness. Ruth bore her a son called Obed, who became the grandfather of King David.

The Scripture records Naomi's restoration.

Ruth 4:14-16 – NKJV
14 Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel!
15 "And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him."
16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him.

Friend, if you return to the Lord Jesus today, He will wipe away your tears and restore all you have lost to the devil. Like Naomi, you will take back "the child" (whatever blessing the devil has devoured or stolen from you) and become comforted, and the people around you will bless the LORD with you.

Stop wasting away in a far country; return home now to Christ!

Prayer:

I repent of my backsliding today and receive God's forgiveness. Father, restore all I have lost to the enemy, in Jesus' name. Amen.

REJECT WORSHIP FROM MEN

"So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty." (Luke 17:10 RSV)

While Barnabas and Paul were preaching the gospel at Lystra, the Bible records that a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother's womb who had never walked.

This man heard Paul speaking, and Paul observed him intently. Seeing that he had faith to be healed, Paul shouted, "Stand up straight on your feet!" And he leaped and walked (Acts 14:7-10). Hallelujah!

When the people of the city saw the wondrous miracle that God had worked through Paul, being undiscerning, they drew the wrong conclusion. They thus gathered to offer sacrifice to Barnabas and Paul, saying in the Lycaonian language, "the gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!" (Acts 14:11-13 NKJV).

As recorded in the Scripture, the people's astonishment did not end with mere shouting.

Acts 14:11-13 – NKJV
11 Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!"
12 And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
13 Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.

The undiscerning people of Lystra immediately began to call the servants of God by new names, the names of their gods. They called Barnabas "Zeus," also known as "Jupiter" (the father of the gods), and Paul "Hermes," also known as "Mercury" (the god of eloquence or interpreter of the gods).

Besides, the priest of Jupiter, along with the multitudes, gathered at their temple, intending to offer sacrifices to Barnabas and Paul as the gods who had come to them in the likeness of men.

What a bunch of ignorant, foolish, and undiscerning folks!

However, despite the ignorance, foolishness, or lack of discernment of the people of Lystra, Barnabas, and Paul, they didn't exploit or defraud them as some servants of God today would have.

Instead, they refused to sit down or stand there comfortably to enjoy, relish, or savor the worship from these undiscerning people, or bask in their glories as many fame-lovers or seekers today do.

How did they respond?

Acts 14:14-18 – NKJV
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out
15 and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,
16 "who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways.
17 "Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness."
18 And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.

What a proper way to respond to flatterers or praise-singers!

With their forceful words and decisive actions, Barnabas and Paul were able to restrain the people from worshipping and sacrificing to them as gods.

What a lesson in humility for God's servants today!

Indeed, astonishing miracles, signs, and wonders can provoke strange reactions from spiritually immature and undiscerning people. As it happened to Barnabas and Paul, in their excitement and astonishment, people may call you several lofty names when they see many mighty acts God has done by your hands or through you.

People may even present to you the sacrifices (worship, praise, or glory) that belong to God. How do you handle that as a servant of God?

Barnabas and Paul vividly demonstrated the best way to handle such a situation and the foolishness of undiscerning people!

When Barnabas and Paul were elevated to the status of gods and were about to be offered sacrifices or worshiped as gods, they vigorously protested and restrained the people.

They demonstrated to the foolish Lycaonian people that they were men of the same nature, frailties, and weaknesses by their passionate words and decisive actions. They tore their clothes and cried in public before all the people. They knew that gods would never do that.

Moreover, Barnabas and Paul pointed the undiscerning people of Lystra to the only true God. They turned their attention and affection away from them to their God through their passionate preaching.

Unfortunately, unlike Barnabas and Paul, some of God's servants today are basking in God's glory and in the praises offered to them by ignorant and undiscerning people because of some miracles, deliverances, or healings God has wrought through them.

Sadly, some servants of God today bear the lofty or eminent names and titles their spiritually immature and undiscerning followers offer. Worse still, they dance to the songs of praise their ignorant followers or congregations composed for them.

Even some greedy servants of God today exploit their undiscerning followers by demanding extraordinary sacrifices, seeds, gifts, or offerings from the recipients of the miracles, healings, or deliverances God did under their ministrations.

Beloved, beware of people who call you by unique, lofty, or eminent names after your ministrations. Beware of spiritually immature or undiscerning people who may offer you worship, praise, or glory due to God after your ministrations.

How do you deal with such people or treat the worship that people offer to you?

Learn from Barnabas and Paul!

Luke 17:10 – RSV
10 So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"

It is wisdom to heed the Lord's admonition to His disciples.

Reject worship from men!

Prayer:

My Dear Heavenly Father, grant me divine wisdom and boldness to deal with the undiscerning people when they seek to offer me the worship, praises, and glory due to You. Help me to reject such sacrifices vigorously as Barnabas and Paul did, in Jesus' name. Amen.

MAKING GODS FOR MEN (Part 2)

"So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: "Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?" (Acts 3:12 NKJV)

When Moses delayed in returning from Mount Sinai, where he had gone to receive from God the tables of the law, the children of Israel became perplexed and agitated and therefore said to Aaron, the next in command to Moses, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." (Exo. 32:1).

But rather than restraining and rebuking them, Aaron fashioned a molded calf. Who should be blamed for the people's carnality, immaturity, or idolatry?

In the first part of this piece, we began to draw out great lessons and cautions from this unfortunate incident.

First, we examined Moses' leadership style and found that it contributed mainly to the spiritual immaturity and carnality of the children of Israel. How?

The one-person leadership of Moses, which elevated him significantly above the people, drew attention only to him, and made all the people look up to him and depend upon him for everything, was what resulted in the people making a god out of Moses and seeking another god to replace him in his temporary absence.

Let us now consider more lessons.

Second, when God came down upon Mount Sinai to speak directly with the children of Israel, the Scripture records that when the people witnessed the thundering, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, they trembled and stood afar off, and they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." (Exo. 20:18-19 NKJV).

Sadly, Moses accepted!

That attitude or mindset led people not to know God intimately, as they rejected communion with God. Only Moses knew God intimately because of his deep and constant communion with God.

While the children of Israel continued to experience, witness, and enjoy supernatural acts of God along their journey to the Promised Land, they became utterly ignorant of the ways of God. It takes deep and constant communion with God to know Him intimately and understand His ways.

The Psalmist testifies, "He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel." (Psalms 103:7 NKJV).

Therefore, it is no wonder that when Moses left them for a short while, they became fearful, perplexed, and agitated, and thus sought new gods to be with them and lead them on their journey.

The children of Israel's unwillingness to draw near to God in deep communion resulted in their ignorance, unbelief, confusion, spiritual immaturity, carnality, and idolatry. That is still the primary cause of spiritual immaturity, carnality, and idolatry in the Church today.

Like Moses, some servants of God today are proud and pleased to stand between God and His people as prayer contractors or mediators. They pride themselves on having a special anointing or favor with God that gives them speedy answers to prayer and good patronage from spiritually immature and undiscerning people.

While a good pastor or leader is expected to constantly pray or intercede for God's people under his care, it is wrong for any pastor to offer himself as a mediator or a go-between between God and His children.

Friend, there is no good substitute for you praying, communicating with God, speaking directly with God, reading, studying, and meditating on God's Word.

Under the New Covenant, every believer has equal access and rights to God. God wants His children to grow in intimacy through regular and personal communion. No pastor is called to be a mediator or a go-between between God and His children!

Paul clearly states this truth.

1 Timothy 2:5-6 – NKJV
5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

As a born-again believer, you don't need to go through any prophet or pastor to relate or commune with God and receive answers to your prayers.

Lastly, when the children of Israel came to the Wilderness of Zin, they became very thirsty and had no water to drink, so they contended with Moses and Aaron (Num. 20:1-8). Although Moses became very angry, God was not. God spoke to Moses about His divine provision of water from the rock for His people.

Moses striking the rock twice, rather than speaking to it as God had instructed him, confused the people and suggested that Moses and Aaron were the ones performing the miracle.

Consider what Moses said to the children of Israel, "Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?" (Num. 20:10 NKJV).

Therefore, the people had the right to worship Moses as a god and to seek another god to replace him in his absence. Here is a caution for all God's servants!

Beloved, you need to be extremely careful with your words while ministering to God's people. You must never fail to make it very clear to people that you are not the healer, the deliverer, the Savior, or the miracle worker, but Jesus Christ is.

Unlike Moses, your words must never suggest that you are the one doing the supernatural works, but rather, it is God working in you and through you.

After the miraculous healing of the man who was lame from his mother's womb at the temple gate, consider Peter's attitude and declaration when the people were incredibly amazed, looking at him and John as gods.

Acts 3:12-16 – NKJV
12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: "Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?
13 "The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go.
14 "But you denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,
15 "and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.
16 "And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

Friend, this should always be your mindset, attitude, and declaration after any miraculous act performed by God through you, if you don't want the spiritually immature people to make a god out of you or seek another god to replace your absence.

When your words or actions after any miracle suggest to people that you did it, you have subtly made a god for them to worship. That is the undoing of some ministers of God today!

Therefore, beware of presenting yourself as a god to God's people through your egocentric leadership, by offering yourself as a mediator between God and His people, or by subtly suggesting, through your words or attitudes, that you are the one performing the miracles for God's people.

Prayer:

I refuse to make myself a god to Your People or make any god for people to worship. Help me, Holy Spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen.

MAKING GODS FOR MEN (Part 1)

"Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." (Exodus 32:1 NKJV)

The Scripture records how God humbled, humiliated, and confounded the arrogant and stubborn Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and brought His people out of Egypt with great signs and wonders.

God descended mightily upon the Egyptians in an indisputable manner. The sorcerers and magicians of Pharaoh recognized that God, not Moses, was dealing with them. They rightly pointed out to Pharaoh, saying, "This is the finger of God." (Exo. 8:19 NKJV).

Ironically, many of the children of Israel didn't recognize that. How sad! Many of the children of Israel wrongly assumed or concluded that Moses delivered them from the bo***ge of Pharaoh and brought them out of Egypt. The temporary absence of Moses exposed their ignorance, unbelief, or confusion.

When Moses delayed returning from the mountain, where he had gone to receive from God the tablets of the law, the children of Israel became fearful and perplexed and therefore asked Aaron to make them gods that would go before them to the Promised Land.

Exodus 32:1 – NKJV
1 Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."

Unfortunately, Aaron granted them their evil request to their shame and destruction. They sought new gods because they didn't know what had happened to Moses on the mountain.

They said, "For this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." (Exo. 32:1 NKJV).

They were not fully aware, convinced, or persuaded that God, not Moses, redeemed them from slavery and led them to the Promised Land. How sad!

Moses was undoubtedly one of the greatest servants of God who ever lived. He was said to be the meekest man in his generation (Num. 12:3). God testified concerning Moses, saying, "He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; and he sees the form of the LORD." (Num. 12:7-8 NKJV).

God mightily used Moses in his generation. Writing about Israel's history without speaking about Moses's unique role is impossible.

Although God used Moses as an instrument of deliverance for Israel's children, Moses never claimed to be the one who saved, delivered, or redeemed the people from slavery. Moses repeatedly presented God as the deliverer of His people (Exo. 6:6, Deut. 4:34, 5:15, 11:2, 26:8).

How did the people mistake Moses for the God who delivered and brought them out of Egypt?

It is undoubtedly wise for us to find out!

The ignorant, carnal, and undiscerning children of Israel wanted some gods to go before them in their journey as a replacement for Moses, whom they claimed brought them out of Egypt (Exo. 32:1).

If the children of Israel had personally known God as their faithful Savior, Deliverer, or Redeemer, they would have remained calm in Moses's absence, knowing that their God is ever living and present with them and would continue to lead them.

But who should be blamed for their carnality or spiritual immaturity?

We cannot blame Moses entirely for Israel's congregation's sensuality, idolatry, or spiritual immaturity. However, Moses cannot be completely absolved from all the blame either.

The thrust of this piece is not to apportion blame but to discover their blunders to avoid them and learn from them. The Scripture writes, "Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come." (1 Cor. 10:11).

What are the lessons we can learn from this account or incident?

First, Moses' leadership style contributed to the spiritual immaturity or lack of discernment of his congregation, Israel's children.

How did Moses' leadership style contribute to the people's spiritual immaturity?

Moses' leadership was "a one-man show leadership."

It was a kind of leadership that elevated one man above the rest and drew all the attention to him. It was a kind of leadership that did it all by himself, causing everyone to look up to him and depend on him alone.

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, recognized that early and rebuked Moses, saying, "What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?" And Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God." (Exo. 18:14-15 NKJV).

Besides the ineffectiveness and weariness that go with "one-man show leadership," it will eventually lead to idolatry, making a god out of the man or seeking another god to replace the man in his absence. That was what happened to the children of Israel.

It is regrettable to observe some of God's servants in our generation still patterning or modeling their leadership after Moses. "One-man-show leadership" is not the kind of leadership found in the New Testament. It will not produce spiritually mature and discerning people.

In Moses' case, one-person-show leadership only produces spiritually immature, undiscerning, carnal, and idolatrous babies, no matter a leader's good intentions, charisma, humility, or spirituality.

Beloved, when you adopt one-person-show leadership—doing it all by yourself, drawing attention only to yourself, making people look up to you and depend only upon you; you are simply making a god for your followers or congregation.

No matter what you say or do, you cannot stop the undiscerning and immature ones among your congregation from worshipping you or treating you as a god.

Likewise, in your absence, as in Moses's case, you cannot stop them from seeking another god in your place. Therefore, avoiding or rejecting this kind of leadership and its inherent pitfalls or traps is wise.

Paul admonishes us, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself." (Philip. 2:3 NKJV).

Discover more lessons from this incident in the second part of this piece.

Prayer:

I refuse to set myself above Your people or draw the attention and affection of Your people to myself. So, help me, Lord, in Jesus' name. Amen.
