Folks I wanted to share this email update from Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett:
Dear Friends,
Seasons: Seasons mark the rhythm of our lives. Here in West Virginia, we understand the four weather seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter. (We are experiencing winter full-force this week)! Then there are the Christian seasons of Advent, Christmastide, Epiphany, Lent, Eastertide, Pentecost and Ordinary Time which guide Christ-followers in our annual pilgrimage from the manger to the empty tomb and beyond.
Appointment-Making Process: We United Methodists experience a third category of seasons called “appointment-making.” Though it is a 365 day a year process, the bulk of the appointment-making work takes place in the spring. While high confidentiality is observed until an appointment is released, the cabinet is transparent about the process. Thus, each year I write a blog describing various aspects of the process.
Goal: The goal of the appointment-making process is to deploy our clergy spiritual leaders for maximum effective ministry in the coming year. The Appointive Cabinet and I focus on appointments that move us toward our mission to discover, develop and deploy passionate spiritual leaders who make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We strive to do this work in a way that lowers anxiety, encourages a healthy Conference environment and respects clergy and churches.
Consultation and Exegesis: The appointment-making process begins with district superintendents consulting with staff-parish relations committees and clergy. Each clergy who is potentially in the moving picture also meets with a group of two to three district superintendents to share their specific gifts, graces and circumstances. This is followed by several appointment-making meetings where the cabinet prays specifically for each church/clergy in the moving picture, carefully “exegetes” clergy and churches, reviews the overall appointment picture and makes appointments for the coming year.
The 2025 appointment-making schedule is:
January 5-8- Appointive Cabinet Retreat
January 22-23- Appointive Cabinet Meetings
February 4-5- Appointive Cabinet Meetings
March 25-26- Appointive Cabinet Meetings
April 15-16- Appointive Cabinet Meetings
Sunday, June 22- Moving pastor’s last Sunday to preach
June 25- Move out day
June 26- Move in day
Sunday, July 6- First Sunday in new appointment
Communication of Appointments: District superintendents will contact clergy about their new appointments as they are finalized. This will be followed by announcement meetings with the moving clergyperson, their District Superintendent and the Staff-Parish Relationships Committee. On a Sunday morning soon thereafter, the clergyperson will announce to their congregation that they will be moving.
Clergy/Church Transitions: The final phase of the appointment-making process involves clergy/church transitions. This includes a “Leaving Well” Zoom call, “Beginning Well” In-Person meeting, Learning Cohorts and Onboarding experience with each new pastor and receiving church.
Thank You: Yes, we are in the midst of the appointment-making season in the West Virginia Conference. Thank you for your prayers and cooperative spirit as we walk through this important season in the life of our annual conference year.
I am grateful for the United Methodist clergy and churches in West Virginia. As always, it is a joy to serve as your bishop.
Blessings,
Debra Wallace-Padgett
