According to the Bible, a rainbow is not merely a beautiful display in the sky, but a symbol of God’s “everlasting promise” never to flood the earth again (Genesis 9:16).
🏹 In the original Hebrew of the Bible, the word for rainbow is keshet (קשת): bow of war. An archers bow.
The word keshet appears frequently in the Bible, but ONLY here does it refer to the rainbow we think of. Everywhere else the word keshet refers to an archer’s bow, the primary weapon of war in the days of ancient Israel, so the immediate association when hearing the word keshet was violence, war, and death.
After the flood, God surprisingly displays a massive bow in the sky. But this bow does not contain an arrow and it is facing upwards, away from earth.
The message is clear: God has set aside his weapon of war and replaced it with a symbol of protecting & loving kindness.
We know God had been very very slow to anger because we know Noah spent decades and decades building the ark. The people repeatedly ignored God. They fought against their Creator with prideful rebellion.
Seeing these bows of war remind us that God fights for us in ways we can’t fully understand. He is our protector, our defender, and our archer in the battle.
All He asks of us is to keep our eyes on Him. Follow Him. Let Him guide us.
With Him as our archer and with us in the daily battles, He actively guarding over us when we feel alone.
Our fight is most often within ourselves. The temptation to focus on ourselves, other people, and situations is very real for us.
His bow of war reminds us that all things are possible with Him.
Even the battle inside of us.
Our feelings will lie to us and tell us a situation feels hopeless BUT GOD- He tells us when our hope is in Him and not in the situations that fall apart or the people who let us down- our hope will grow and not fade.
God is our Guarding Archer of eternal hope. The same powerful hope that protected Noah protects us today.
Think about how you feel when you see a rainbow.
As a follower of Jesus it hits us differently. It encourages us. It delights us. It reminds of who our amazing God is.
It’s never an accident or coincidence that you are in the right place at the right time to see a ‘bow of war’.
God, by His loving grace, chose that moment in time to encourage you. To remind you. And to give you hope.
