Piano Concert with Wayman Chin
Save the Date!

September 20 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Free concert- all are welcome

Please join us for an afternoon of American piano music presented by pianist Wayman Chin. Mr. Chin is an internationally acclaimed pianist having performed in venues across the United States, Asia, and the United Kingdom. His playing has been described as “transcendental, long lines spun like glorious thread,” “ferociously concentrated, intensed, focused, and musically astute” (Boston Herald), “vividly characterized and atmospheric” (Stamford Mercury, U.K.), and “sheer magic… every note is colored” (the Freeman, Philippines).

An advocate of contemporary music, Mr. Chin has premiered a number of new works by noted composers including Scott Wheeler, Marti Epstein, Meyer Kupferman, Jeremy Van Buskirk, and Paul Brust.

Mr. Chin holds degrees from the University of Hartford’s Hartt School and Yale University. He has served on the faculty at the Longy School of Music since 1994, served as the Dean of the Conservatory from 2008 – 2020, served as chair of the Chamber Music Program, and in 2020 was named Dean Emeritus.

Matthew Mission Food Pantry Requests Peanut Butter

For the month of September, the Matthew Mission Food Pantry is collecting peanut butter. Your contributions will help alleviate hunger for those who live with food insecurity.

The mission of the Matthew Mission Food Pantry, which is located at 76 Church Green in the First Parish Church in Taunton, is to fight hunger with an emphasis on personal dignity – their guests can select what they need from the pantry’s shelves. They are open every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The second Saturday is a limited distribution ((tuna, cereal, mac & cheese, bagels). The fourth Saturday is a full pantry.

We Have a New Director of Music Ministry!
Meet Tony Winters
Tony Winters (pronouns He or They) is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist specializing in a unique blend of music of any and all styles, and loves to take the old and make it new to re-imagine what “church music” can be.

He has been a Unitarian Universalist since 2012, having found his spiritual roots at First Parish in Bridgewater, Mass., and serving as their assistant music director from 2016 until 2023. For the years that followed, Tony has been a freelance guest musician and sometimes worship leader for UU churches in the greater Boston/South Shore area, followed by a stint as the Acting Music Director for United First Parish Church in Quincy for all of last year.

Tony lives in Bridgewater with his wife Melanie and their two cats, Sunshine and Lily. He spends his weekdays working at Bridgewater State University. He is beyond excited to get started with UU Middleboro, to work with this incredibly talented congregation, and to share a beautiful musical experience together!

The Celtic tradition is rich in folklore, spirituality and music. Musicians Barry and Patty Simon will share some favorite stories and readings interspersed with lots of music, including chants, hymns, lovely airs and lively dance tunes. Over many years, Patty and Barry have brought beautiful music to FUUSM with flutes and other wind instruments and hammered dulcimer. Occasionally, they've even brought us magic acts!

Living on a Sioux Reservation Was a Life-Changing Experience
Deanne Bonnar
We were two young people who had grown up in Middleborough. In 1968 our lives were going in a certain direction when the government sent us to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, and we were never the same people
again. Deanne had just finished a Master’s Degree in Social Work, and Jim had completed a pediatric internship. Deanne later became a professor of social work at Boston University, and Jim became a psychiatrist who ended his career working with Healthcare for the Homeless in Boston. Deanne and Jim Bonnar are members of FUUSM.

Wolf’s Message
Presented by Natalie Johnson and Sue Curtiss

August 9 @ 9:00 am – 9:45 am

Wolf’s Message is the story of how death by lightning strike unites two families searching for meaning and hope in the face of tragic loss. It is the true story of how Michael “Wolf” Pasakarnis, disabled by severe mental illness for most of his 29 years, came to Plymouth, MA, to create a life for himself. It was here that he created a family of gentle and caring people who appreciated his unique gifts and held him in love until he passed due to a lightning strike sitting beneath a beloved tree where he frequently meditated. Wolf’s Message is that of connection of the human spirit to the soul journey through the exploration of the power of the heart to bridge the physical and spiritual worlds, the connection of all humans to a grand web of existence, and the concept that consciousness survives physical death. Our discussion this morning is based on the book and documentary film, Wolf’s Message.
