Every year on August 5, the dedication of the basilica is commemorated. On that day, a large number of white petals are scattered from the top of the Pauline Chapel, alluding to the miraculous event of snow falling on the Esquiline Hill in the middle of summer.

This is a beautiful act of Marian devotion that reminds us of an essential truth proclaimed by Leo XIII regarding the mediation of Our Lady. In his encyclical *Octobri mense*, on the Holy Rosary, the pontiff affirms that “from that immense treasure of all graces brought by the Lord, […] absolutely nothing, nothing at all is granted to us, according to God’s will, except through Mary; so that just as no one can reach the Supreme Father except through the Son, in much the same way no one can reach Christ except through the Mother.”
