Our former director Fr. Cristian Sáenz SJ who is now a history professor at the Gregorian University in Rome was our speaker at the Acu business lunch. He spoke to us about Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical on AI and human dignity. His focus: new technologies have to serve the common good, not just the interests of wealthier countries and the companies that build them. If access to these tools isn’t shared broadly, they end up widening the gap instead of closing it.

As a historian, F. Cristian spoke about technologies that have had broad societal impact in the past. He mentioned railroads and air travel which governments eventually regulated.

For the professionals in attendance across tech, finance, law, and medicine it was a good reminder that our faith shouldn’t sit on the sidelines of our work; our Catholic faith must inform the tools we build and drive the decisions we make.

Father & Son Apostolate Brings Hope to Venezuela Through Service

This past week, members of the Father & Son Apostolate put their faith into action by collecting supplies to be delivered to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Doral for distribution to those impacted by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela. Working side by side, fathers and sons gathered and packed essential items—medications, non‑perishable foods, baby formula, and diapers—marking each donation with a cross and Estovir.org before sending them to Venezuela.

The project offered a meaningful chance for the men and young men to bond while living out the service pillar of the ACU, deepening their awareness of their vocation to serve Christ in those most in need. The Father & Son Apostolate continues to strengthen families through shared mission and serves as an important gateway for adult men to enter the ACU.

ACU Aspirant Mike Wood spoke about discernment at our Business Lunch

The Agrupación’s Business Lunch speaker was Aspirant Mike Wood. Mike spoke about Ignatian discernment in personal and professional life.

Mike spent almost ten years in the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), where he was formed in Ignatian prayer and the Spiritual Exercises. He now serves as head of HR for GEMRT in Miami and previously worked with Inktel, a call center firm. Mike is married with two children.

In his talk, Mike stressed that discernment is about choosing among multiple good options, never among immoral or illegal ones, which cannot be truly discerned. When we face several legitimate paths in our personal lives or our work, Ignatian discernment can help aid us in our decision making.

He invited us to pay attention to interior movements before God—consolation (peace, clarity, rightness) and desolation (restlessness, confusion, heaviness)—within the broader context of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. Over time, this practice helps us see what draws us closer to God, and what pulls us away, helping shape our decisions.

The Agrupación business lunch is organized by invitation for early and mid career professionals. The lunch brings together Agrupados and other invited professionals from a variety of industries to hear short compelling talks on a variety of topics and introduce aspects of the Agrupacion.

The lunches are hosted by Marty Perez, Manny Anton, and other Congregantes dedicated to the apostolate. Working Agrupados are encouraged to suggest colleagues and friends that might be candidates to attend the lunch.

Last month, students from the center joined with close to 100 college students from all over Puerto Rico for the Encuentro Nacional de Pastorales Universitarias Católica at Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola, Guaynabo. Their goal is to create a collaborative network between Catholic student groups across college campuses. Around 14 public and private university campuses from all over the island were represented.

It was a historic event, as the last such gathering occurred more than 20 years ago. Auxiliary Bishop Thomás González (Diocese of San Juan) was present for most of the event, along with some representatives of religious orders and Catholic entrepreneurs. Jesuit regent Reynaldo Belfort Pierrilus, SJ, assists in young adult ministry at the Centro Universitario Católico (CUC – Catholic University Center) at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. Aspirantes from the ACU San Juan Chapter, Jean Vera and Xavier Vera helped coordinating the event Many students reported they felt gratitude and joy for such space as they came together for prayer, communal dialog and fellowship in the Lord. Please pray for the continued renewal of young adult ministry in Puerto Rico!

Approximately 40 students gathered for the meeting. This included 13 returning graduates from the three previous years who participated on a panel. A shared struggle was learning to structure the ample free time they have as college students to remain focused on academics and their faith. They also encouraged involvement in college campus activities and clubs. Conflict resolution techniques were also discussed in relation to roommates. They also discussed proactively seeking out the Catholic community and establishing new friendships.

Afterwards, we enjoyed hand-made oven fired pizza from Luna Rossa Cucina with Juan Rozo. The moderators for the group are Congregants Jay Velasco and Erik Vieira.
