Open Awareness Buddhist Center

Open Awareness Buddhist Center The Open Awareness Buddhist Center miamibuddhism.com is a place of refuge and sanctuary for all beings. Lama Karma Chotso is the resident teacher.

The Open Awareness Buddhist Center formerly Kagyu Shedrip Choling is a place of refuge and sanctuary for all beings. The Sangha of Open Awareness is a fellowship of practitioners who are committed to ethics, honesty, respect for all, and to providing a welcoming atmosphere with the pure intention of benefitting sentient beings through Dharma activities. These include the gathering of merit and wis

dom, sharing the teachings of the Buddhadharma, and meditating – all as taught in the Tibetan traditions. The garden of the Open Awareness Center, called “The Stupa Garden of Merit”, opens onto the Miami Little River that flows with the tides. The garden, with four (4) large stupas, paths for circumambulation, and surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers, is a place of tranquility, peace and beauty available to everyone. Open Awareness continues a 20-year tradition of chanting practices and meditations along with the weekly offering of traditional Tibetan butterlamps. Please see our calendar to choose the events you’d like to attend. You will always be welcome.

Thich Nhat Hanh on How to Hug Deeply...

"You have to really hug the [one] you are holding. You have to make him or her very real in your arms.. breathing consciously and hugging with all your body, spirit, and heart. Hugging meditation is a practice of mindfulness. “Breathing in, I know my dear one is in my arms, alive. Breathing out, he or she is so precious to me.” If you breathe deeply like that, holding the person you love, the energy of your care and appreciation will pe*****te into [them] and they will be nourished and bloom like a flower." ~Thich Nhat Hanh

In a world that often glorifies individual success and achievement, it's important to remember that true success isn't just about our own accomplishments, but also about the positive impact we create in the lives of those around us too.

When we choose to encourage others, we not only create a point of light in their lives; we send a potential ripple of positivity that can travel farther than we might imagine. And WE rise. The good feelings that come from this nestle in our own hearts, make us more resilient for times when we need it most.

From Lama Karma Chötso: I can’t thank you enough for supporting OABC throughout the pandemic. Because of your kindness OABC is still here to continue to benefit all. This in itself is one miracle. Another miracle will be seeing you in person to share our beautiful Center again and pick up with our activities to promote peace in the world.

SAVE THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 12-13
FOR TEACHINGS BY JIM SCOTT!
Sessions at 1 p.m. EST both Saturday and Sunday.

From www.ktgrinpoche.org:
“When Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche first came to the West in 1977, at the request and in the company of His Holiness Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa, Jim was fortunate to be in the original group of students to receive and follow Rinpoche.”

Khenpo Rinpoche taught at the Open Awareness Buddhist Center a few years in a row until a stroke in 2006 limited his activities. Jim Scott graciously added our center to his American tours after that and during the pandemic has continued teaching online.

From his bio: “Following Rinpoche's example, the programs Jim pilots have the characteristic feature of being closely linked with the texts of the tradition, though at the same time seen through the eyes of an ordinary person from a western background. All who have had the great good fortune of meeting Khenpo Tsultrim know that a special feature of his blessing transmission is his expression of the teachings in song. Jim Scott has played a central role in helping to make this possible in English. His dearest wish is to do whatever he can to help fulfill Rinpoche's vision of song as a path of awakening heart.”

Lama Karma Chotso adds, “Jim is a Dharma friend and this opportunity to receive his wisdom through teachings is very special! I encourage everyone to take advantage of it!”

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Lama Karma Chötso will teach the second in-person seminar on February 20th from 2-5 p.m. at Open Awareness Buddhist Center. www.miamibuddhism.org As with the January seminar, this one will include a meditation technique and singing a song of realization.

We love our furry families, right? We think pets are the best and love ours immensely!

Why not bring your pet to celebrate National Pet Day to be blessed by Lama Karma Chötso, the Tibetan Buddhist Nun at the Open Awareness Buddhist Center that will offer this special Sunday experience.

Meet Sengay, the beloved doggie who is Lama's companion and pictured here.

Enter the sacred Stupa Garden of Merit and walk the Kora path (which means to circumambulate with intention). This walking practice in Tibetan Buddhism is viewed as meditative movement often as part of pilgrimage, celebration, ceremony or ritual. You will note the ten Buddhist directions of the stupas built by Lama and the sangha here, representing North, South, East, West, northeast, southeast, northwest and southwest, as well as the Earth and Sky, all dwelling spaces of the Buddha nature everywhere.

All living beings are precious to us, as the Buddha reminded us:
"There is nothing more precious to a creature than its very life".
Walk the Circle, meet Lama with your pet and receive your blessing.

We encourage a $20 donation as we are also experiencing the impacts of being closed during Covid. No one will be turned away if these times are also a challenge for you. We are in the same storm, friends.

Bring your furry friend in a proper cage or leashed, please. Register here so we can plan how many of you are coming. Be masked and practice physical distance. Wear comfy clothes as the space is an outdoor garden. Park on our circle drive or grass and mindfully park on our neighbors open lawn at the West side of the Center. Enter the backyard at the West side gate to find the Garden of Merit.

We are only two days away!

Lama Karma Chötso invites you to join her as she hosts Dr. Richard Davidson, founder of the Center for Healthy Minds, author of "Altered Traits" and "The Emotional Life of Your Brain" THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th, at 7:00pm.

One of TIME magazine's 100 most influential people, this neuroscientist's work was inspired by the Dalai Lama, who encouraged him to look into the nature of the mind as science sees it through the lens of meditation.
