The Black History Behind Memorial Day

On May 1, 1865, thousands of newly freed Black Americans gathered at a former Confederate prison camp in Charleston, SC. They properly reburied 257 Union soldiers who had died in captivity, dedicating the site as “Martyrs of the Race Course.” Led by 3,000 Black schoolchildren carrying armfuls of flowers, this historic procession is recognized by historians as one of the very first Memorial Day celebrations—then called “Decoration Day.”

This weekend, we honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice, remembering the deep roots of liberation and love that started it all.

Still smiling from Resurrection Sunday 🌸🌷🌺💐🩷

What a beautiful time we had celebrating, laughing, and fellowshipping together as a church family.

So grateful for our YPD who gave Easter care kits to the caregivers in the church every item a reminder to keep going, keep smiling, and keep the faith.

The joy didn’t end Sunday ... we’re still walking in it 🙌🏾

On this Good Friday, we gather at the cross to reflect on the Seven Last Words of Jesus. Words that still speak life, love, and hope to us today. Even in his final moments, Christ shows us the depth of his care and the power of his sacrifice.

Join us for a meaningful time of worship and reflection at
Greater St. Paul AME Church – Coconut Grove
📍 3680 Thomas Ave., Miami, FL 33133

What an amazing day at the 18th Ave block party on Saturday!

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community through food, prayer, and connection. Our Health Ministry provided blood pressure checks, and we were able to share resources on voting rights from Black Liberation Alliance Movement, EZRI Outreach counseling, and important information around health and climate awareness.

We also had the opportunity to share information about our worship services and connect with neighbors in a meaningful way.

Most importantly, we were blessed to pray with individuals and families and witness the beauty of our community coming together in unity and joy.

We also extend appreciation to Commissioner Keon Hardemon, community leaders and organizers who made this event possible. The community needed this.

Registration is still open for EZRI Reentry Initiative’s FREE 6-week support groups for grief, trauma, and reentry after incarceration—call (305) 456-1278 to enroll.

Grateful to our and all who helped make this day possible!

Palm Sunday reminded us that Jesus comes with purpose even when it’s not how we expect. As we cried “Hosanna,” we were also called to loose, release, and surrender what’s been tied up. Because what is tied up cannot be used by God until it is surrendered to God.

We thank God for the baptism of Bro. Cephus, a beautiful reminder that God is still making all things new and that new life in Christ is available to us all.

Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 🌿💧✝️
