The real
Saint Patrick: A Sinner Redeemed, Apostle of Ireland
I, Patrick, a sinner, the least of all believers, simple and despised by many, was born in Britain to a deacon father and priest grandfather—yet I knew not the true God. At sixteen, raiders tore me from home, enslaved me in Ireland for six years among pagans. There, in chains and exile, the Lord opened my unbelieving heart: I remembered my sins, turned wholly to Him, and He pitied my youth and ignorance. As a father comforts his son, He guarded me before I knew Him, raised me from the mire of despair, and saved me from all evil by His Spirit dwelling within.
Freed by divine call, I returned home—yet God summoned me back to the very land of my captivity. Daily I face murder, betrayal, or slavery, but I fear nothing, for heaven’s promises stand firm. Through Christ’s mighty strength—His incarnation, death-conquering resurrection, ascension, and outpoured Holy Spirit—I became His unwilling instrument: many thousands born again to God, sons and daughters of the living God, co-heirs with Christ.
I am greatly God’s debtor, for He has poured such grace that Ireland, once idol-worshipping and lost, now confesses Jesus Christ as Lord. Let every tongue proclaim: He who believes and is baptized shall be saved! I offer my soul as a living sacrifice to Christ my Lord, who saved me out of all my troubles—unworthy though I am, I exalt His name to the ends of the earth.
This is my confession: from captive sinner to faithful witness, all by sovereign mercy. Thanks be to God forever
