Myths and Truths of Osun
Ore Yeye Osun
Today, due to questions I've received, I'll offer some guidelines.
Within Isese (traditional Yoruba worship), Osun holds significant importance in its character aspects.
One of Osun's most important attributes, beyond others, is Honesty, Transparency, and Rectitude. This deity does not accept lies, much less in her name.
Regarding her aspect as a righteous mother, she also embraces her children and followers when their character is clean and pure.
It's not about perfection, but about transforming the human ego to uphold honesty throughout life.
When we speak of Idosu (true initiation into Osun), it's not about receiving an icon (ojugbo); it's a pact with truth and justice.
Her attributes are represented in that Ojubo because each one represents the living energy of Osun, which influences our destiny.
The Ota of the Osun River has been imbued with her energy since ancient times.
The bronze Ide embodies her energy of light, purity, character, and prosperity.
Bronze combs represent her aspects of femininity and beauty, among others.
The bronze Adja bell invokes her spiritual sound, among other qualities, calling upon her energy.
The Ekodide represents her regal stature and a profound connection to the feminine energy of Iyami.
The only cowrie shell associated with her is the erindilogun (16 cowrie shells), as the use of owo ero is for oracular systems. No other type of cowrie shell is associated with money or prosperity, since Osun herself is a source of abundance in life, creation, and fertility. Osun is not represented with any other type of cowrie shell, except for the sea cowrie shells (buzio de Aje). Each deity has its elements of nature related to an energetic aspect and based on Yoruba cosmology.
Today, saying you are a priest of Osun is more delicate than saying you are consecrated.
Those who live their faith, undergoing serious and sanctioned rituals, will receive the blessing of our great mother. Something that can only be proven with words is not for sale; the truth is revealed through the pacts and real processes of an initiation with a Priestess/Priestess of Osun.
We will continue discussing the myths and truths of our beautiful Isese practice.
