Dominic, we are rooted in the rich tradition of the Order of Preachers, our global family of friars, nuns, sisters, and laity. Acting both globally and locally, the Dominican Sisters Conference places the transforming grace of the Dominican charism at the service of our world and Church, especially in responding to the cry of the poor and to the urgent need to preserve Earth’s integrity. Like our

sister Catherine of Siena, we embrace the prophetic call to speak truth in our day. Our preaching and action for justice are the fruit of our Dominican tradition of contemplative prayer and pursuit of truth through study and dialogue. The rich diversity of our membership enables us to broaden our individual perspectives and bring our experiences to bear on the needs of our world. We are a sign of unity in our fractured world with a strong, collective voice that speaks effectively for justice.

A passionate advocate for care of the Earth, Sr. Janet Weyker, OP, has dedicated her life to advancing environmental justice and inspiring communities to protect our common home. 🌎💚

As a co-founder of the Eco-Justice Center, Sr. Janet has worked alongside community groups on projects that promote environmental awareness, justice, and responsible care for creation. Her commitment reminds us that caring for the Earth is deeply connected to caring for one another and building a more just world. 🌱🤝

Through her advocacy and community engagement, Sr. Janet continues to inspire others to take action for our common home and to recognize the call to protect God’s creation. 🌿

🌟 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: The Foundresses of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois ✨

In August 1873, seven courageous Dominican pioneers traveled from Kentucky to Jacksonville, Illinois, answering a call to serve through education and ministry. Sisters M. Josephine Meagher, OP; M. Agnes Maguire, OP; M. Cecilia Carey, OP; M. Rachel Conway, OP; M. Thomas Wight, OP; M. Thomasina Simpson, OP; and M. Catherine Young, OP became the founding Sisters of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. 🏫

Little did these pioneers know that their mission would grow into a legacy spanning generations. Over the years, 747 Sisters and 753 Associates would minister in more than 120 educational centers, four hospitals, and 25 ministries, serving communities from coast to coast—from San Diego to Washington, D.C. 🇺🇸

Their story is one of courage, faith, education, and service. These founding Sisters planted seeds of Dominican mission that continue to bear fruit today, reminding us that a small group of faithful pioneers can make a lasting difference in the lives of countless people. 📖

✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Kathleen (Mother Leo Vincent) Short, OP ✨

A visionary leader in Catholic education, Sr. Kathleen “Mother Leo Vincent” Short, OP, served as Superior of the Newburgh Dominicans and helped shape the future of Catholic higher education in New York. As President and co-founder of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, she oversaw its transformation from a junior college into an accredited college. 📚

Her commitment to education extended beyond the college campus. Sr. Kathleen served as a Director of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and later dedicated herself to ministry as a massage therapist, bringing her gifts of service and care to others. Her life reflected a deep belief in the power of education, leadership, and compassionate service.

Sr. Kathleen’s vision and dedication helped strengthen Catholic education and create opportunities for generations of students. Her legacy reminds us that faithful leadership can transform institutions, open doors, and inspire lasting change.

🕊️✨ Ten Years of the Dominican Month for Peace ✨

For ten years, the Dominican Family has come together in prayer and solidarity with our brothers and sisters living amid conflict, violence, and human rights violations around the world.

Since 2017, the Dominican Month for Peace has focused our attention on Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Ukraine, Venezuela, Myanmar, the Peruvian Amazon, Haiti, and Cameroon—lifting up the struggles of each community and reminding us that peace calls us to both pray and act.

🌎 In this tenth year, our focus turns to Mexico, a country with which the Dominican Family shares a 500-year history of presence and ministry. This year offers a special opportunity to deepen our solidarity, listen to the experiences of our brothers and sisters, and pray for peace, justice, and hope.

🙏 The Dominican Month for Peace begins on November 29, 2026—the First Sunday of Advent. As we enter this season of expectation, may our prayers become a source of strength and our solidarity become a witness to the peace we long to see in our world.

Join the Dominican Family this Advent as we pray for peace in Mexico, including the Unite States, Canada, and throughout our world. 🇲🇽🕊️

🎓✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Mother Joseph Dunn, OP, PhD ✨

Born in Boonton, New Jersey, in 1885, Mother Joseph Dunn entered the Caldwell Dominican Community in 1902 and spent her early years as a sister teaching at the elementary and high school levels. Elected Mother Superior of the Caldwell Dominican Sisters in 1927, she was re-elected in 1933 and again in 1939 — a testament to the trust her sisters placed in her vision. 🕊️

That same year 1927, she first sought permission to open a women's college in Caldwell, only to be turned down. But Mother Joseph never let go of the dream. Twelve years later, amid the Great Depression and on the eve of war, she and her Council did the impossible: Caldwell College for Women opened its doors on September 22, 1939, with thirty-four students.

As the college's second president, she pushed Dominican sisters toward advanced study, building a faculty as devoted to learning as she was. A lifelong friend of the sisters once said of her: “That quiet, able nun on the hill was a mental match for anyone in the Community.”

Mother Joseph passed away on Good Friday, March 30, 1956, leaving behind a legacy of education, faith, and Dominican spirit that continues to shape Caldwell University today.

A visionary leader and compassionate advocate, Sr. Ursula Joyce, OP, has dedicated her life to responding to the needs of people in her community. As a founding mother of housing and human service organizations, she helped create pathways of support and opportunity for those who needed them most. 🏠

Sr. Ursula’s ministry is rooted in a simple but powerful call to action: “If you see something that needs to be done, KEEP AT IT, KEEP AT IT, KEEP AT IT!” Her words capture the determination, faith, and perseverance that shaped her extraordinary legacy. 🙏✨

Her witness reminds us that meaningful change often begins by simply seeing a need and choosing to respond. Through her leadership, service, and unwavering commitment to others, Sr. Ursula demonstrates the power of persistence and compassionate action to transform communities. 🌿❤️

🌟✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Bernadette Yochimochi, M.M. & Sr. Susanna Hayashi, M.M. ✨

Courageous pastoral companions, Sr. Bernadette Yochimochi, M.M. and Sr. Susanna Hayashi, M.M., stood alongside Japanese Americans during one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history. After Executive Order 9066 authorized the incarceration of Japanese Americans in U.S. internment camps in 1942, the two Maryknoll Sisters accompanied them to Manzanar, where they ministered to the spiritual and temporal needs of several hundred detainees for the next three years. 🙏❤️

Their decision to accompany those who had been forcibly removed from their homes reflects a profound commitment to compassion, solidarity, and pastoral care. In the midst of fear, injustice, and uncertainty, Sr. Bernadette and Sr. Susanna brought a presence of hope and faith to the Manzanar community. 🌿✨

Their witness reminds us that ministry sometimes means simply being present with those who suffer, standing beside people in difficult times, and responding with courage and love. Their faithful service continues to call us toward greater compassion, justice, and solidarity. ❤️🙏

A dedicated missionary and visionary leader, Sr. Stephanie Mohun, OP, served as Prioress of St. Mary of the Springs for 24 years, helping expand the congregation’s ministries and educational mission. During her leadership, she founded three academies, two colleges, and a teacher-training school for Sisters, creating new opportunities for education and formation. 📚

Sr. Stephanie also helped extend the congregation’s mission beyond the United States by initiating its mission to China, reflecting her courage, vision, and commitment to sharing the Dominican mission across cultures and borders. 🌎

Her life reminds us that strong leadership, education, and a spirit of mission can open new paths for generations to come. Sr. Stephanie’s vision and dedication continue to inspire the Dominican Sisters of Peace and all those who carry forward the call to serve. 🙏

✨ 250 Sisters Who Shaped the USA: Sr. Clement Johnson, OP ✨

A pioneering scientist and educator, Sr. Clement Johnson, OP, dedicated her ministry to exploring the mysteries of science and expanding opportunities for young women in the field of scientific research.

In the 1960s and 70s, Sr. Clement researched retinal dystrophy, a condition that can cause blindness. As one of only about 200 electron microscopists in the nation, she brought her expertise to Dominican College, where she also trained other young women to use electron microscopes and pursue scientific study. 🔬

Sr. Clement’s work reminds us that curiosity, education and a commitment to discovery can open doors for generations to come. Her dedication to science and to educating young women reflects the many ways Dominican sisters have contributed their gifts to the advancement of knowledge and their communities. ✨

A dedicated advocate for young people and families, Sr. John Martin “Johnnie” Fixa, OP, provided strong leadership to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose’s Vision of Hope program, helping make a Catholic education accessible to underserved students in California.

Through her commitment and leadership, Vision of Hope has raised more than $34 million to provide tuition assistance for students in eight parochial schools, supporting young people and families who might otherwise struggle to afford a Catholic education. Her work reflects a deep commitment to serving the young, the poor and the vulnerable. 📚

Sr. John Martin’s dedication reminds us that advocacy can open doors, create opportunities and help build a brighter future for generations to come. Her leadership and compassion continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of students and families throughout California. ✨
