St. Mary Magdalen has been called “the home of the Traditional Latin Mass in mid-Missouri.” Though there are other Traditional Mass sites are in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, and Louisiana. The first Mass offered by the SSPX in our area was in May of
1979 at the Tiger Hotel in Columbia, MO. We had Mass twice a month on Monday evening. At that time our Chapel was named The Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel. We had about 20 parishioners. In March of 1981, we moved to a more permanent location on the northeast corner of the city square in Mexico, MO; to the basement of a craft store. We now had the Blessed Sacrament, Stations of the Cross, and could make visits at anytime during the week! On June 7, 1981, we had our first Sunday Mass! The following year, that building was sold and we moved to the opposite side of the square to a room above a ceramics shop called The Mud Puddle. Our first Mass at this location was on December 19th, 1982. In 1991 we purchased our current chapel at 1200 N. Clark in Mexico, MO. It was dedicated on June 16, 1991, and the name was changed to St. Mary Magdalen Chapel. We now have Mass every Sunday at 4 p.m. immediately following the Rosary and Confessions. On the third Sunday of every month, we also have Benediction of the Blessed Sacrement immediately following Mass. First Saturday Mass is offered at 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month. We have members of The Third Order of St. Francis and The League of Christ the King, and our altar servers are almost all members of the Guild of St.
