Our beautiful church was founded the middle of November, 1861.
The church started out in a log structure and in 1886, a new brick church was built and remained as a worship center until this new church was built in 1961.
The church was founded by German families and until the late 1930’s German was used in the services and some of the present members went to confirmation school taught in German.
In 1890, the first church parsonage was built and since that time it has been remodeled but three rooms of the original parsonage still remain in the present parsonage. The Sunday school building was built in late 1895 and still remains on the grounds but has been converted into a Youth Center.
At one time the church was in a thriving community with Zion Evangelical and Reform Church, the country store, Wittke’s Blacksmith Shop and Jefferson School. Now the community consists of St. John’s and Jefferson School.
Many people in the community look forward each year to the annual ice cream social which at one time was called a church picnic and has been held for over 80 years.
Organizations of the church include Women of the NALC, Lutheran Men in Mission, Altar Guild, Thrivent and Lutheran Youth Organization.
On November 16, 2016, the congregation celebrated its 155th Anniversary.
