🎶 Music Monday: “What Wondrous Love Is This” 🎶

“What wondrous love is this,
that caused the Lord of life
to lay aside his crown
for my soul.”

During Holy Week, we reflect on the incredible mystery of Jesus’ love. This verse invites us to sit in reverent awe of Christ’s humility and the witness of love offered through the cross.

"Sometimes we underestimate the power of words, thinking that only our actions matter in God’s eyes." Today's prayer from The Upper Room daily devotional guide:

The plane turbulence was moderate, but I’d experienced far worse. However, when I turned to the college-aged person sitting next to me, I saw from the look on her face that she was terrified. I decided to talk to her, explaining what was happening, how long it generally lasted, and assuring h...

🎚"This is the Day" first appeared in Mr. Garrett's collection Scripture in Song (1967). Since then stanzas have been added through oral tradition, including “This is the day when he rose again” and “This is the day that the Spirit comes.”

The Psalter Hymnal Handbook notes, “‘This Is the Day’ celebrates God’s mighty acts of redemption (originally referring to the Passover before the Exodus), hailing ‘the day’ as a special day of the Lord.” In other words, the reference is not just to any day but, for the Christian, Sunday—the Lord’s Day. (See Revelation 1:10, Matthew 12:8 and Acts 2:42 and 20:7 for references to the Lord’s Day.)

The tune is Mr. Garrett’s arrangement of a folk tune from Fiji.*

📖This is the day...
Let us rejoice and glad in it. 🎶

Many of us grew up singing this song... so much so that we may not have reflected on the words. "This Is the Day" (United Methodist Hymnal #657) is simple refrain by Les Garrett. It invites us into a sense of gratitude.

💬What are you glad for today?

"There is overwhelming awe in the realization that God has done this “for me,” which he repeats three times in this verse. We are so undeserving of such a wonderful gift.

“Amazing love!” Charles responds, an echo of Romans 5:8 to which our communion ritual also alludes, “God shows his love for us, because while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” via Forgiveness for me? A Wesley hymn devotion for Lent by Joe Iovino and The United Methodist Church

Charles Wesley’s “And Can It Be that I Should Gain?” teaches that Jesus' death and resurrection are expressions of God's amazing love.

A prayer for peace via The United Methodist Church:

Jesus, Prince of Peace, hear our prayers for all the peoples of the world. Deliver us from the curse of violence and all that creates it. Forgive us and heal us, that we may offer forgiveness and healing to the world.
