Good evening,
Allow me to begin by saying that this message is not in anyway political. I am very aware that there is a diversity of political opinions in our congregation, and there is room in the kingdom for civil disagreement on many issues.
With that said, I came out of a meeting with another pastor today and was blindsided by the news that Charlie Kirk had been assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University. Regardless of political ideology, we can all agree that this is a tragedy. His wife Erika was in attendance at the event, accompanied by their two small children. I cannot even imagine the pain and shock this young woman is going through right now. In a moment, their children were robbed of their father and she lost her husband of only a few years.
While Charlie Kirk is best known for his political work, he and his family were part of Dream City Church, a multi-site church in Arizona. I don’t personally know much about that church; but I do know that Kirk often made statements about his faith and his belief that Jesus Christ is the only Savior of mankind and the Bible is the final authority for believers. All we have is his testimony to that point.
I don’t have a perfect response to this overwhelmingly tragic event. I am just as confused as anyone. All I can do is invite you all to join in prayer in response to this tragedy. Here are some things we can be praying for:
1. Let us rejoice that Charlie had made a clear profession of faith in Jesus Christ. Whether you agree with his politics or not, we can thank the Lord that Charlie was a believer and is now in the presence of the Lord.
2. Pray for Erika and their children (age 3 and 1), that the Holy Spirit will comfort them and lead them through grief and eventually healing.
3. In the coming days, politicians on both sides of every issue will attempt to use this tragedy for their own purposes. There will be anger, confusion, sorrow, and every other emotion on the spectrum of human experience. Pray for those in power and those under their influence.
4. Pray that the Church in America responds faithfully and compassionately, staying faithful to Christ rather than being drawn into actions and statements that might serve purposes other than Christ’s purposes.
5. Pray that this is an opportunity for people to hear and receive the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no other answer for the darkness of our world.
6. Seek the Lord’s comfort and peace as you sort through your own emotions in response to these events.
I am sure there are many other ways we can be praying in the coming days, but these are a few of the things I will be praying tonight.
Above all, let these events move you to compassion and prayer.
