Bedford Road Baptist Church just a jumble of God's slighly off center artistry [Ephesians 2:10]

Pharaoh takes up a lot of space in the start of the exodus narrative, but it is really about him, or is it about what God is doing and has been doing for generations before Pharaoh comes on the scene? This week we will examine God’s greater plan and the covenants that He established that set in motion the restoration of man after the fall.

The first nine plagues seem to be attacks on the powers of particular Egyptian deities. What is important, however, is that eventually Moses was able to do things the Egyptian magicians couldn’t replicate (8:16–19). They call it “the finger of God” (ʾṢ-BAʿ ʾELŌHÎM), a figure of speech that seems to indicate the direct action of God, rather than just a “trick” Moses was doing in the name of YHWH. Noting that the plagues spared Israel is a vital element as well, since it indicates YHWH was not indiscriminate and was clearly advocating for Israel, showing just how ludicrous Pharaoh’s rejection was.

Contrary to the movies, Moses’s return was initially met with a positive response (4:31) but that quickly changed when Pharaoh started putting the screws to the Hebrews. When Moses goes to YHWH to ask why he would do things this way, YHWH replies with a series of promises predicated upon his nature, beginning with “I am YHWH” (6:1–9). Moses’s objection (6:12) is a weird one. What does “uncircumcised lips” even mean?

As Moses prepares to make his way back to Egypt, he has four strange interactions. None of them really make much sense on their own, but together they paint a picture of things to come.

In the coming year, we will be expanding our preaching team to include four men beside me and the elders who already preach. This means I have to start planning things further ahead than I used to.

Our first series in 2026 is going to be a survey of the Epistle to the Ephesians. Then, after the Resurrection season, we'll begin an ongoing series of messages from the Book of Exodus.

Pray for us, and especially for me. Our congregation has seen incredible growth in the past couple of years, and we are trying to meet the congregation's needs without compromising what makes Bedford Road the unique congregation that it is.

I am REALLY EXCITED about the addition of the preaching team. But this is a new experience for me. For 20+ years, I have preached 50-52 weeks a year. With the addition of the preaching team, that will be down closer to 45-48 weeks a year so I can both get some much needed rest and also focus on training/teaching beyond the Sunday mornings.

God is doing great things at Bedford Road! We're going to keep moving forward in faith.

Good evening,

Allow me to begin by saying that this message is not in anyway political. I am very aware that there is a diversity of political opinions in our congregation, and there is room in the kingdom for civil disagreement on many issues.

With that said, I came out of a meeting with another pastor today and was blindsided by the news that Charlie Kirk had been assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University. Regardless of political ideology, we can all agree that this is a tragedy. His wife Erika was in attendance at the event, accompanied by their two small children. I cannot even imagine the pain and shock this young woman is going through right now. In a moment, their children were robbed of their father and she lost her husband of only a few years.

While Charlie Kirk is best known for his political work, he and his family were part of Dream City Church, a multi-site church in Arizona. I don’t personally know much about that church; but I do know that Kirk often made statements about his faith and his belief that Jesus Christ is the only Savior of mankind and the Bible is the final authority for believers. All we have is his testimony to that point.

I don’t have a perfect response to this overwhelmingly tragic event. I am just as confused as anyone. All I can do is invite you all to join in prayer in response to this tragedy. Here are some things we can be praying for:

1. Let us rejoice that Charlie had made a clear profession of faith in Jesus Christ. Whether you agree with his politics or not, we can thank the Lord that Charlie was a believer and is now in the presence of the Lord.

2. Pray for Erika and their children (age 3 and 1), that the Holy Spirit will comfort them and lead them through grief and eventually healing.

3. In the coming days, politicians on both sides of every issue will attempt to use this tragedy for their own purposes. There will be anger, confusion, sorrow, and every other emotion on the spectrum of human experience. Pray for those in power and those under their influence.

4. Pray that the Church in America responds faithfully and compassionately, staying faithful to Christ rather than being drawn into actions and statements that might serve purposes other than Christ’s purposes.

5. Pray that this is an opportunity for people to hear and receive the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no other answer for the darkness of our world.

6. Seek the Lord’s comfort and peace as you sort through your own emotions in response to these events.

I am sure there are many other ways we can be praying in the coming days, but these are a few of the things I will be praying tonight.

Above all, let these events move you to compassion and prayer.
