First Christian Church Meridian Ms

First Christian Church Meridian Ms Jesus Christ is calling, shaping and sending us to serve in our mission fields at home, at work and beyond. What do we believe? (Origin)
* Why Am I Here?

Ph. 601-693-1425 Location: 1301 23rd Avenue Meridian, MS Each of us asks four basic life questions:

* Who Am I? (Identity)
* Where Did I Come From? (Purpose)
* Where Am I Going? (Destiny)

We believe God in the scriptures gives us story after story of people trying to find their way to the answers of these questions. God loves us as we seek to find love, joy, peace, patience,

kindness, goodness and self control. The church was created to help us along that path. Jesus Christ offers us redemption and relationship. By the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, we find hope and healing for today and tomorrow. As Disciples of Christ, we are a church that is open to all who seek God. We have beliefs and practices in common with all sorts of Christians. These apparent similarities sometimes are superficial, sometimes fundamental. We baptize by immersion, so we look like Baptists. We have Communion every Sunday, so we look a bit like Roman Catholics. We stress the ministry of the laity, so we look a little like Quakers. Our congregations call their pastors rather than accepting assigned ministers, so in that respect we look like Presbyterians. We rely heavily on preaching and teaching, so we look somewhat like Methodists. We have congregational government, so we look a lot like the United Church of Christ. We are a safe place for you to ask questions, to seek your own path, and to join Christ in seeking and rescuing others!

New Group Assisting Dementia Caregivers

A Caregiver Support Group created to assist Meridian-area families struggling with Alzheimer’s or other dementia issues will meet May 19 at Baptist Anderson Regional Medical Center, featuring a presentation by an elder law attorney.

The second meeting of the Caregiver Support Group will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Cafeteria Conference Room. Hattiesburg lawyer Angela Davis-Morris will talk on “Legal Capacity After a Dementia Diagnosis” and answer questions, with time also reserved for individual sharing.

Supported by several churches and community groups, the group meets at 5:30 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month and helps provide information about available resources. The medical center and Alzheimer’s Association are partners in the new outreach program, which seeks to build connections with families that may feel isolated and weary.

The program also acknowledges steady increases in dementia issues seen in an aging population, with faith communities eager to collaborate with medical professionals in helping address needs.

“Our Caregiver Support Group tries to be a supportive place for those caring for persons dealing with some form of dementia,” said the Rev. Mark Benson, pastor of First Christian Church. “Each session has an educational component, but a significant portion of the hour is designated for caregivers’ sharing. The group is currently only for caregivers, but we hope other services will grow from this experience to help those with the illness.”

Meetings of Alzheimer’s Association support groups are conducted by trained facilitators such as Susan Jackson, who has worked on dementia-care matters professionally and as a volunteer.

“I worked in admissions and marketing in long-term care for 20-plus years,” Jackson said. “I felt the Lord sent me to this mission. I love Psalms 79:1, ‘Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone.’ We want our support group to give encouragement and information to caregivers who are lost in the confusion and need a listening and helpful place filled with compassion and love.”

Other key group supporters include Supertalk 103.3 General Manager Shelley Gilmore, host of the “Grind, Grace and Growth” radio program. Gilmore is among Meridian figures with professional and personal experience in managing family dementia challenges.

To register for the meeting (not required in advance) or for more information, contact the Helpline at (800) 272-3900.
